My friend and I are getting together to celebrate her birthday and we don't get each other gifts. But she is going through a really touch time right now and has had a terrible couple of months and I want to do something very nice for her to let her know I care about her. She is a very spiritual person and I wanted to do something in that nature. Something that isn't too costly. Can anyone give me idea?

What can I do next?

What about a nice daily devotional or one of those calendars that has inspiring, spritual words for each day or similar book with daily thoughts and no dates? I love those. Who cares if it's the middle of the year? You are a very thoughtful friend. She is luck to have you.

When my ex and I were separating, my friend gave me the book Eat, Pray, Love and a journal. She wrote a lovely message in there about writing down my thoughts, even just a short "good/bad day" and then looking back later to see the healing. Several years later its one of my favorite things. I still can't read it without getting emmotional b/c the pain is so strong in my writing but I'm very greatful to her for it.

Another thing would be a daily devotional.

I really dislike when I've made an agreement with friends to not give gifts and they show up with a gift. While I know their intentions are in the right place, and they mean well, it puts me in a place to feel like I have to reciprocate in kind and give them at gift at the next opportunity. This brings us right back into gift giving cycle, which we've agreed to stay out of. I, personally, don't like getting gifts without reciprocating - makes me feel awkward, or even verging on needy - oh things are so bad for you, here is a little something....

Can't you invite her out for an afternoon? If she is a spiritual person, she would probably appreciate your gift of friendship, time, and a compassionate ear. Or just an afternoon out to not talk about her worries at all and just have fun. For me, that would be the best gift.

Take her to lunch.
Plant a tree in honor of her. It can be on your property.
Spend time with her.
Light a candler at church.
Donate money in her name to a worthy cause.

a very nice candle with a note telling her to light it & to remember a sense of Peace each time she notices it. Scents truly do help clear one's mind!

A subscription to Sojourners Magazine, a magazine for Christians with very down to earth, positive, non-preachy articles-always uplifting and helping to see positive examples of spirituality in every day life(btw, the subscription is $20 or less).

The book "Wings Of Silver" by Jo Petty.
My late Dad gave me that once... it is all dog eared and very cherished.

Or a journal.

You can get both of these from your local bookstores.

look for a small item, a jade turtle is one I got once, about 1/2 an inch long, and tell her that it is to help her when she is stressed. She can hold it and know that it means that you support her and want her to be happy.

I concur with a beautiful journal and start it off with a motivational quote. Then tell her (if she's on Pinterest or other social site or off the Bible) to write down one motivational quote a day. She can make it up herself or write down something someone else has said. I found being reminded ever so often that everything will be okay helped me. I pinned my quotes and I go through them and they make me happy, sometimes sad but overall it gives me strength.
