my grandpa is about to be 93 and has started a college fund for my daughter. He's given money to set aside for college for her before and i just sent a thank you and cookies (he lives 6 hours away). I'd like to do/send him something special but am not very creative. Any ideas?

Hi Dawn,
For thank you gifts I normally do gift cards, but this case is different. I don't think your grandpa is doing this for any reward except to make his great granddaughter's future brighter. I think sending something with a monetary value (like a gift card) might be insulting. Maybe send him something she can help make? A homemade card she scribbles on or baked goods she can help stir or whatever. Be sure to tell grandpa she helped put extra love into it and how thankful she is. That would be the best thank you of all.

one of the best things we ever did for my grandpa was to video a message of thanks and love, for his 80th birthday. it was very short and my son only really said "happy birthday!" but we were both there and i gave a small, very informal speech (i was sitting on the bed and my aunt recorded it) about how much we love and appreciate him, how we don't say it enough, etc. something just from the heart, involving your daughter as much as possible. if you really want to go all out (and have the time) involve as many family members as possible and make a video out of it for him to keep. they have places that will set them to music (and i guess programs where you can do it yourself, probably too!). i'd never seen my grandpa shed a tear in all my life and he bawled like a baby :)

depending on how much you want to spend,I have two ideas. First, a picture frame with a picture of your grandaughter. I think they have ones in which you could record your daughters voice. A less expensive choice would be a nice card in which you could record your daughters voice. Being a grandparent myself there is nothing that gives me more pleasure than hearing my grandchildrens voices. Hope this will be of help to you. J. B.

How about a hardcover photobook full of pics and maybe poems or funny stories all of your daughter. You can get these through places like Walgreens, Bay photo, Target... We got all the kids together last year at x-mas and did a "photo shoot" and made a book up with little "facts" about each child and lots of pictures. The books were aHUGE hit!

I love Shutterfly (shutterfly.com). In minutes you can create a photo album for your grandfather and send it to him (you create it online and they print and send). I make one every year for our sons' grandparents! They're also really affordable!

How about do a surprise visit. Just hop in the car and go visit him. If you really think about it, 6 hrs is not very long at all, especially to thank someone who loves you and whom you love too. Don't you think that would really make his day/weekend? It would probably make yours too! Just split the drive up, drive for three hours and take a lunch break and before you know it, you'll be at grandpas. He's 93, so you may not have all that much longer w/ him and when he's gone you'll say to yourself, "maybe 6 hours really was'nt that far". Bring along a portable dvd player...life savers!!

Good Morning Dawn, What a Wonderful Gr pa you have that is so awesome. How about making him a collage of pictures of your child. They have some great frames at Wally World. Dress them up or get some you already have cut them to fit and fill in the slots.
You didn't say what age your little Princess is but if she talks about what she wants to be when she goes up dress her up in a outfit like it and get the picture. You can be as creative as you want. Have fun with it. Then take the collage to UPS or some place like that, they will box it safely for you and send it on it's way. You can add a little story to go with the pictures. If she wants to be a Dr. get her a little Dr's bag. If she wants to be a pilot, get her a jacket with little wings on it. A teacher get her books and an Apple for a little deck. Have fun with it Dawn..
I just did one for my Step Dad and Step mom ( yup her heard right ) My mom passed away in 08, after several years suffering from Alzheimers. He has been my dad since I was 13, he remarried few months ago so I have a step dad with a step mom and we all love her to pieces. Dad almost cried when he saw it.

God Bless you and your family Dawn, Special Blessings for your dear Gr Father

definitely something personalized & not expensive. I think the photo collage is a great idea! Or my personal favorite is a Family scrapbook....something simple which he can show off to his friends. My father passed away unexpectedly last week, & we used the Family Journal I've been making (for months now) at the funeral. It touched everybody's hearts....& brought back many memories, especially for the older crew. Most importantly, it celebrates our lineage & showcases how similar our generations are.....from pics of playing on the river to sightseeing at stome of the same places.

You may look at the edible arangements to go along with your thank you card. Those fruit baskets are beautiful & VERY tasty! Good luck.
