Getting Rid of Fruit Flies?

I love all the recommendations, but I also noted that if you have a planter that accumulates standing water, they can breed in their. I didn't know about the drain! I always find them at the sink & near my computer monitor. Don't know why they like this thing. maybe it is the cold air register below?

okay this a tried and true trap for fruit flies I get the all year round in my house and I never know where they come from but this get rid of them
get a coffee cup or cup similar is size and shape, pour Apple cidar vinegar maybe 1/3 the cup, mix honey and dish soap in the vinegar. On the top of the cup take a piece of paper and make a cone shape tape it together and make sure the small end it sits down below the rim of the cup. Place this where there are the most fruit flies and other places- fair warning this is going to stink up your house - in few days usually you have caught them all

I know this sounds weird, but for some reason they like to congregate down drains. Someone told me this a while ago when I had an issue. I didn't believe them because I had never even seen the fruit flies anywhere near our kitchen. I was desperate though, and took her advice. I poured some vinegar down our drain and then put paper towels soaked in the vinegar in teh drains to block any from coming back up. I did it in my kitchen and my bathroom. Within days they were all gone!

we had a fruit fly problem at one point too and I found these little containers (they look like an apple) specifically for fruit flies. It's a little container that has a liquid bottle of something that you pour into the apple looking container. I've seen them at Walmart. We got ours at a grocery store so maybe try there as well. I'm not sure exactly what they are called but they were in the same section at Walmart as the mouse traps and such. They worked great for us, the only problem with them is that they have a short life span and then you have to get another one. They are not super expensive but still annoying.

First, DON"T bring your house down to freezing, it will freeze your pipes and you will have big troubles.
The suggestion to put wine (or fruit juice) in a bowl, cover it with plastic wrap and poke a few holes in it will work great. That's what I did to get rid of them and it only took a few day. Good luck.

I've had great luck with these.

You can make a trap......a big container with a lid with some big chunks of fruit in it. Let it sit upstairs for an hour or two, then sneak up on it and quickly put the lid on! Then throw them outside. We get them in our compost bucket often and I just shut the lid on them and take them outside with the compost!

I have used the apple cider vinegar trick that others have suggested, and it works really well!

We've had this problem from time to time. I like to leave fruit out in a big fruit bowl because this way I guarentee my children will eat fruit. Usually this problems happens with banana's in our home.

Here's the solution that always works in our home. Buy a really cheap bottle of fruity wine (or a decent bottle and drink most of it first), poor out all but about 1/2 cup of wine and leave the bottle open near the area's that you're having problems. In a few days they should all be gone. You will notice a big decrease after one night.
One time we had fruit flies in several areas of the house because our children would eat an apple in their room and throw it in the trash which would atract the flies. So, we just moved the bottle around for a few days and within a week they were all gone.

You need to figure out where else they are coming from. You have found 1, now there probably is more. Wet towels, drains, and of course fruit are favorite places. Once they don't have a place to be they will disappear in a few days.

Being a vegan I have the fine art of getting rid of fruit flies down to an art! I actually have it so I no longer even get them even though we always at every single moment have fresh fruit and veggies. yay!

Take a two liter bottle, empty naturally. Put about a table spoon of any dish washing soap in it. I find something that smells like apples works best. Fill the rest about a fourth of the way up with apple cider vinegar. It has to be apple cider. Shake that sucker up! take the cap off and put one by every drain. You can make them with 20 oz bottles too if you wish. Anyways every single time you go buy them shake them up. They instantly get caught in the bubble and death becomes them.

My exterminator taught us this. He told us they actually breed in the drains and even though they fly to the trash can, fruit, house everywhere it's like with roaches get them at their nest. It's much faster and they aren't going to leave that little area even.

those critters are almost impossible sometimes!

#1: put any and all fruit in the fridge. dont leave food sitting on plates, or even in the garbage at this point because that encourages them. put food in an old ice cream bucket, and dump it (including the bucket if you want) when your trash is going to be picked up.
#2 clean all your surfaces. doesnt have to be with bleach or anything, just whatever you normally use.
#3 stop letting these flies ruin your day. cook at home; you'll save a ton of money.
#4 your heating bill wont go through the roof, i was VERY doubtful about that whole "turn your heat down when you are gone to save money" thing. but we've been trying it and it actually works. so even if you completely wipe out the whole house with cold, you can be assured its going to cost you no more to warm it back up than it normally would to keep it heated up.
#5 you dont have to go to that extreme to get rid of them
heres what you can do
-get a glass, plastic cup, container, whatever you want.
-fill it less than half full with apple cider vinegar.
-put saran wrap tightly over the top, and poke some holes in the top
-leave it sitting where the flies seem to 'congregate'. it might take a while, but they will crawl in there, and not be able to get back out. take extreme caution to not open it in the house, or bump it and loosen the saran wrap. you can take it outdoors and dump it if you want.

these things can come from the most innocent sources, but one thing is for sure that they are hard to get rid of. they also feed on just about anything, but they are not harmful to humans or pets. even if you eat them, as gross as that sounds, they wont hurt you. just like i said, put your fruit and stuff in the fridge for now, dont leave food sitting out AT ALL, and keep the surfaces clean. my mom says that a certain grocery store has them bad so she wont buy her produce from there. but really, anything you can keep in the fridge will help you prevent them.

anyway, good luck, i hope this idea works, and stop going overboard, its not like they are lice or anything ;P

When I get them in my kitchen I will suck them up with the vacuum hose. Laugh if you must, but it works. Then I clean everything normally and wipe everything down with a Clorox type wipe and baking soda and vinegar the garbage disposal.

This is what worked best for us: Fruit flies like sweet, as you know - the sweeter the better. Fill a bowl (we used old foil pie tins so we could throw them out) where the flies are (and out of reach of kids if possible) about 1/4 of the way full with sugar water or fruit juice. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and put a rubber band around it so it is extra tight. Then poke holes with a fork in the plastic wrap. The flies go in through the holes after sweet liquid, but they can't get out. Change it every other day or so. Good luck!
