Getting Baby to Drink from Bottle

I breastfeed exclusively; however, I would like my 2 month old to be able to drink breastmilk from a bottle. She is refusing the bottle from her Dad (and grandmother). She spits out the milk or gags and cries and cries. Any tips? We are using a slow flow nipple and have tried Avent and Playtex Nurser bottles with both silicone and latex nipples. I would love for her Dad to be able to participate and it would be nice to be able to go out without the baby once in a while. Has anyone else had this problem and overcome it? BTW, I have a son as well who went from bottle to breast and back with no problems. Thanks!

You might just need to try different kind of bottles and nipples until you find something that the baby likes. My son liked the tri-flow bottles and the dr. brown's bottles. the only thing about the dr. brown's was that there were so many pieces to wash. the tri-flow was nice because as my son got older i just had to adjust the nipple to a faster setting. good luck!

the main problem- it's not you holding her, looking at her, talking or singing to her. would you give that up for a plastic bottle, honestly? but if she does find it easier to pull milk from a bottle she may give you up completely. just a warning if you're not ready to give up breast-feeding yet. let dad burp her. I know it sounds selfish, but you don't get this close time back.

My baby hated the slow flow too. She would cry. I think the slow flow is tooo slow.

I went to the Nuk 0-3 months nipples. I also purchased a bottle kit for my Medala (probably spelled it wrong) electric pump. It came with nipples.

The best way to get your baby started on bottles is to be completely out of sight during feedings. If my baby sees me and she's hungry, she will reject the bottle and want me. She's 4 1/2 months right now. :)

Try the "Mam" brand baby bottle... it is so great and does NOT contain the harmful plastic BPA chemicals in it. Read this article about it: http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A...
At Amazon. com you can get the MAM bottles, here is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/002-###-###-####-###...
I really like the MAM bottles.... my baby does too. It's really good and no bubbles/gas accumulates in it as they drink.
Every so often, just try to introduce the bottle again...gradually, they may accept drinking from it. It may take time, but just keep trying. However, some babies just will NOT accept a bottle willingly. Each baby's temperament and personality is different. Good luck, hope this helps.

The miracle solution for my son was the Playtex Nurser Orthodontic Nipple. They are hard to find, but they are shaped more like a pacifier and when positioned properly the milk comes out the top of the nipple so it doesn't shoot right in the back of their throat like a regular nipple, so he didn't gag on the bottle.

Only other advise is to just stick with it - she will get the hang of it, she is still very young.

I can't remember the name of the bottles but they are "Doctor ____" bottles. You can get them at Babies R Us for sure. My son had the same problem and I tried about 5 bottles and he took the Doctor one's first try. Good luck!!!

We used the Dr. Brown bottles with the premie nipples. Actually, Dr. Brown was the only bottle we found that had the premie nipples! They are much slower and baby has to actually suck to get milk out. They do wear out, but baby will get used to it eventually. The other nipples will leak fairly quickly if you hold them upside down. Try the Dr. Brown with the premie nipples. My son thought he was drowning and choking before we found these! Now he goes from breast to anything. The other thing you could try is spoonfeeding or cup feeding (obviously, it is a little different than drinking from a cup). You can find out about those online or one of the Dr. Sears books. Every child is different, just keep trying! Good luck!!!

I see you are getting lots of bottle advice, and you are about to get one more. My daughter had a similar issue. She sucked so h*** o* even the "low-flow" nipples that milk just went everywhere and made a mess. We tried many, many different types of bottles until we found the Breast Flow bottles by First Years available at Babies R Us and Amazon.

She had no problems switching back and forth from breast to bottle after finding these lovelies and a little patience.

Best of Luck to you!

Hi! I went thru the same thing. Things I did that worked: put the baby in something else that she is not used to eating in such as a bouncer, leave the house for a few hours and have someones else feed the baby, used the Avent bottle. I know it is hard, but eventually she will start giving in because she gets hungry. Hang in there! It will get better soon.
