How accurate is ultrasound at detecting gender? I just had my 20 week u/s and they said it was a girl. I have two boy's, so I'm skeptical.

What can I do next?

S.,

Ultrasounds are not 100%, it all depends on how cooperative the fetus wants to be. But they are way better than 30 years ago, if they were around then. For us, I didn't want to know with my son, but did with my daughter. She was cooperative enough the the tech got a good look at her parts and with certainty said a girl. She even pointed out to us, and printed a picture of the "girl parts" which to this day I don't see. I even asked her several times if she was sure it was a girl, and without hesitation she said: girl.

I'd talk to the doc and maybe look over the pix with him/her if you have some doubts. Maybe at a later date get another ultrasound, if insurance covers it.

Hope this helps,
Melissa

S....

That was me last year! I also have 2 boys and they said our third was a girl and I was too scared to get excited.

One thing to remember: If the doc/ultrasound tech said it was a girl, it's probably a girl. They really dont like to say anything unless they are sure:)

So go ahead and buy something pink...I know you want to!!

Pretty accurate. They do put the disclaimer at the bottom, but when you go in for your next appointment with your doctor they will have the ultrasound photos and you can ask them to go over them with you. That way there is no question in your mind.

However even the doctor will tell you there's that one in a million chance that they are wrong and you give birth to a boy. But one in a million isn't bad at all! It is probably a girl. congrats btw! We found out Monday we're having a boy! LOL.

I don't think they will tell you unless the are relatively certain of the gender. They were right with both of mine. :)
Congrats on the girl. I know at least 3 other couples who had to boys and a girl for their third. So it's certainly not impossible. Congratulations!

:) Well, it's a 50/50 chance each time, so just because you had boys technically doesn't mean you're more likely to have a boy the third time. Congratulations!

Usually after 17 weeks an ultrasound determining gender is pretty acurate. Mostly it depends on the skill of the technicican and whether or not they were able to actually see the sex and not a lack of certain genitalia. If she was able to get a picture of what looks like three lines where the peepee should be, then odds are you are having a girl.

On a personal note, we had our ultrasound at 18 weeks, and they were able to definitely see the little boy peepee (our third). Congrats on the girl!!

congratulations on your baby girl after 2 boys! i am in the opposite position, we have 2 girls and hope for a BOY! but anyways. with both my pregnancies we were told at 20 weeks they were girls and they both really were! i had my u/s done at Salem Radiology on mission st both times and the techs were really great and knew what they were talking about. besides that they arent supposed to tell you if they are not sure! so i would go out and buy some PINK for your little Princess! congrats!! what does your "mother's intuition" tell you? BOY or GIRL?? its funny with my first baby i knew from the get go it was girl, with my second i swore it was a BOY! even after 4 u/s saying GIRL i said BOY! 1 day after xmas SHE was born! i couldnt be happier with another girl though. but were ready for a third and hoping BOY! also think about whats this pregnancy been like for you? have you been sick nonstop? were you sick with your boys?? i heard that being pregnant with boys is a walk in the park! but when prego with a girl you are doing nothing but puking! i agree with it too! my first daughter i had morning sickness all day and it lasted till i was 7 months! luckily i was only green at the gills with my seocon for three months! but good luck to you and it really sounds like its a GIRL!!!!!!!
