Have the gas company come out and make sure it's not a leak. Better to be safe then sorry. They will either confirm it's nothing, or something. Win either way. You don't ever want to assume it's nothing.

Call your HVAC representative and/or gas company NOW and get it checked out.

I have a very sensitive nose and just after we built our house, I kept smelling gas when no one in my family could smell it. They made me feel like I was crazy, BUT.... I called the gas company anyway (that's what they are there for)... and we had to evacuate due to a gas leak for a couple of days until it was repaired.

Don't sit and wait.... ACT on it.

If you are concerned about a possible fire hazard, call for a repair or inspection.

When a gas heater first fires up it will smell like something is burning. It should only last for a few minutes.

ETA: A gas leak WILL NOT smell like something is burning. A gas leak will smell like sulphur.
