Gas Drops

With my first son, someone had given us gas drops as a gift (it was a gift basket with all kinds of meds) and i have never used gas drops before. My doctor had mentioned a long time ago that they don't work but my 1 month old seems so uncomfortable. It makes feeding frustrating because he is pushing and grunting and squirming. It makes him crabby...and i just want to help him...i want my happy little baby back. So any thoughts on gas drops or ways to relieve his discomfort?

What can I do next?

My son was very gassy until at 2 months I switched his formula to Good Start, he got much better. I used gas drops though & they worked very well. My doctor says they are harmless. I only used half of the dropper.

Hi M.,
I had to write because our children are almost exactly the same ages except or baby is 4.5 months now...and yes, they are all boys too. I have found that the gas drops seem to work differentlt depending on the child. I had a doctor tell me that you couldn't use too much so feel free to put it in every bottle. If breast feeding, you may want to review your diet choices to make sure they are not the cause. Personally, I have decided that the bottle makes the difference. I don't know if you are breast feeding or bottle feeding, but I found that the ventair was a good bottle and I am currently using the sassy mam ultivent system bottles. They are great and also free of any BPA plastic so they are super safe too! But, you may have to buy them online unless you are fortunate enough to live where your store carries them. they are popular because of the BPA Free status and stores can't get them or keep them. And last but not least...burping after every 2 oz. is a good plan if you need to. If the problem still persists and you are using formula, you may want to try switching to something else.

And remember, every baby is different and trial and error is sometimes the only way to find what works for your bundle of joy. So hang in there....you'll get there! :) I wish you all the best!

I also have a 1 month old. I used the gas drops with my 2 1/2 yo daughter when she was little. I also changed my diet and di some crazy stuff to reduce the gas. It wasn't very effective. DON'T DO IT!!! I gotta tell you that I purchased this organic "GRIPE WATER" from Walgreens. IT WAS A MIRACLE!!! My 1 month old no longer screamed for hours at a time due to her gas. she started sleeping through her farting and it was wonderful. I didn't have to change what I ate and didn't use the gas drops either. My Pediatrrician ok'ed the Gripe Water before I gave it to her!!! TRY IT!!!

I prefer to use peppermint essential oil on his tummy. A little goes a long way, it's all natural, and worked like a charm.

Young Living is the best kind, but you need to get it through a distributor. I can give you the name of mine if you want, because I'm not sure how well the health store brands will work compared to this.

Good luck!

I'm not sure about the gas drops...they didn't really do much for either of my boys but i've heard good things about gripe water...i haven't used that either, though...what worked for us was massage and sometimes letting them lie on their backs and bicycling their legs or bringing their knees to their chests seemed to help...also letting them lie on their tummy helped too...i've also heard chamomile tea, but i wouldn't try that unless i checked with the pediatrician...good luck :)

I am guessing you have Mylecon drops or something similar. They work very slightly. You can try them and also try an infant message. Starting at his arms, rub softly and work your way down and do downward strokes over his tummy. This helped my kids. You can also look up infant massage on the internet. There is a site with pictures detailing how to do it but I do not have the name--you should be able to Google it.

Be careful. If there is an undiagnosed allergy to aspirin there could be a reaction to the gas drops. Check the lalels.
