Frustrated About Fertility.

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant with our second, on and off, for nearly five years. The drs. say everything is fine with me and my hubby, but still nothing. I have tried ovulation kits, I tried laying with my hips up for 20 mins. after and we have tried not trying... which is actually harder than trying! We have tried herbal remedies too. Has anyone else had a similar problem that can give me any hope? I keep thinking okay it's just not meant to be, but I'm not ready to give up yet.

What can I do next?

Don't give up. Dr. Robert Altman at Sutter Gould Medical is the best when it comes to fertility. Someone you might want to talk to if you haven't already. Be patient - don't give up!

Hi S. -

I'm 18 weeks pregnant for the first time, after trying for 6 years. What did it for me, I think, was changing my diet completely thereby reducing inflammation in my body and increasing my body's ability to regulate hormones, namely serotonin. Diet - "Ultrametabolism" by Dr. Mark Hyman is my inspiration. The book mentioned below is also excellent. See an acupuncturist who is focused on nutrition and relaxation, and can provide you with an HPA Profile test for neortransmitters and adrenal function, followed up with targeted supplements (or ask your doctor for this). I have a berkeley/albany acupuncturist recommendation for you if you like.

Hi S. - I do not see an update since your original request - are you expecting yet? If not here is some info: I have been learning recently about how unsafe ingredients in personal care products made by major manufacturers in the US could be contributing to infertility because of unsafe ingredients that could cause infertility, as well as chronic disease. Please visit www.findgreenhere.com (safe cosmetics page, cosmetic database - insert the names of your personal care products and/or key ingredients). After researching, you may find that you want to stop using anything on yourself, and hubby or daughter unless it is all "clean and green and toxin-free". That potentially could help with fertility. You story sounds so familiar to me!! When our oldest was 3 we had started trying to have another child. It just wasn't happening for us. After years of trying, the dr said he wanted to run some tests, I was having issues putting and keeping on weight, I was very underweight, would have panic attacks, sleeplessness, and just wasn't feeling right. In my case it turned out to be Grave's disease. I went on med's and had it taken care of. After I was back to normal, we started trying again... still nothing.

Finally, I just gave up. I was exhausted from the high's and low's you get when you think you might be but take a test and be so disappointed. I thought, Well I am happy with my husband and our beautiful son, I am lucky to even have them. Once I accepted this and relaxed and didn't think about it, we became pregnant with our second. My oldest then was 7 years old!!

I now have 2 amazing sons, and 15 months ago had our 3rd, child an amazing and beautiful daughter!! I would have to tell you to just relax and enjoy what you have. Sometimes things like this are stress related because you want this so badly. If the dr has ruled everything out already, I would just say to enjoy life, love what you have, and just relax. You could take prenatal vitamins just to help your body prepare, but still try to relax and live/love life.

On a side note... my menstral cycle was never normal, sometimes I wouldn't have a period for months and then when I would I'd be hemmoraging or sometimes I'd have my period within a 2 weeks time. My doctor said that I may not ovulate every single month, or like someone who has a consistant menstral cycle.

Good Luck! :)

Have you tried seeing a Chiropractor? Dr. Hansen (in Elk Grove off of Elk Grove Blvd) is like a modern day miracle worker. His number is ###-###-#### and his website is www.elkgrovebiocranial.com I would highly recommend him.

Hi S.,
This may be "an old wives tale" or it may have been a coincidence....

My husband and I wanted a second child to be born about 2 years after our first son. So we stopped using contraceptives when our son was about 11 months old. No conception.
Months went by... no conception.

When we were visiting my mom I mentioned to her that we had hoped to conceive, but "nothing's happening." When I was packing up to go back home, she picked up a pair of my husbands briefs, "Maybe it would help if Bill would switch to boxer shorts."
"Why would that make any difference?" I asked
"The briefs fit snuggly and hold the testicles up against the body. In all male animals (mom was a cattlewoman) they are designed to hang loose and free from the heat of the body.... Boxer shorts sure aren't gonna do either of you any harm...."

He switched short styles. Our daughter is two and a half years younger than her brother. She is now 45 years old.

Best wishes on your project.

Merylyn (aka Mommie Salami.. that daughter's sense of humor)

I also recommend the book Taking Charge of your Fertitily. It is written by Toni Weschler. It took me 1 try to get pregnant with my first(I didn't have the book then) and 2 1/2 years to get my second, so I understand your pain. This book is so empowering, you will love it! Good luck!

HI S.
I am going to give you a little sage advise..Go and see a Fertility specialist now. We were exactly the same as you. We had our son 9 months to the day after we started trying. He is now 8 and I am still not pregnant. We have been trying for 5 years and now for the last year we have been with a Fertility specialist. I am due for my 12th and 13th IUI today and tomorrow. Please do not leave it. I am 41 and I have massive guilt and regret for saying everything is OK and it will just happen.

Well one time I douched with warm water and got pregnant! What a happy surprise that was for me! I wanted more kids, but my husband didn't.

I have also heard of some vitamins that helped a woman get pregnant in my home based business. If you are interested I am sure I could get more information on exactly what she took. I know she just had her baby about a month ago.

Blessings, B.

My husband and I went through the same thing. It took 5 years for our 1st! I went to Northern California Fertility; however, at the time I got PG I was getting a second opinion at UC Davis and we were both much more comfortable there only after one meeting. I think what did it for us, is that my cousin and her son moved in with us for 6 months after the death of her father. It was such a distraction that I stopped charting, taking my temperature, taking medication and everything. I know it is easier said than done, but not doing anything helped us. My doctors did find that I do not metabolize folic acid, so I am on VERY high doses of that with a pill called Folgard. Also, I have a blood clotting gene (haven't had one, but there is a gene) that I had to take baby aspirin for.

Good Luck to you and don't give up hope!

has your doctor ran any tests? Or both of you?
When you say you tried Ovulation kits, did you not detect a surge or you did but still did not become pregnant.
Have you tried the BBT method (daily temperatures?)
Check out www.fertilityfriend.com for some great advice.

Good luck

My husband and I have been married for 4 1/2 years. We didn't start "trying" until about a year ago. My doctor put me on metformin. It is a medication to help with diabetes but one of the side effects is that it helps you ovulate. He started me out with a low dose and then increased it. When I went in for appointments, he could tell if I was going to ovulate and from which ovary. In June 2007, the one month I couldn't make the appointment is the month I got PG. I credit my doctor for knowing what he does, but I also think that not stressing over it that month helped. I just gave birth on March 3rd! Talk to your doctor and see what he says.
