We have a Beagle and two shepherds. They all do really well together.

Do as much research as you possibly can, look in the shelters. Ask at Petsmart and Petco.

As long as it is trained adn socialized then it should be OK.

Smaller dogs need security. You have to be able to gauge where your children are in the "calm" department. Are they able to handle your bigger dog? (For instance my eight year old can get our 140lb dog to do any thing she tells him to). Children simply need to understand that dogs come in all sizes, but with the same number of teeth as bigger dogs. Little dogs have lower tolerances to everything..including stimuli that get them upset. SO, make sure the kids are ready for that. French Bulldogs are smart little dogs and from what I understand if you get a well-bred one they don't have as many health problems as some of the toy breeds. However, they snore like freight trains :) Good Luck!

French Bulldogs... are supposed to be good pets with a good disposition.
But yes, research it online.
Like people, dogs have their own personality/temperament as well.

I have wanted a French Bulldog... but well, with my 2 kids and other pets we have... I don't want another pet to care for right now.

Important to do is, when you are choosing a dog... hang out there and observe the litter AND interact with the dogs... because each dog will have its own personality... and some may come to you, or not. AND see how they react, with your kids there. BRING your kids with you, when you are choosing the dog. Very important... to see how the various dogs, react with your kids.

A dog, will require lots of time... just like having a child.... and they get lonely being left at home a lot....

And, yes, you need to see how your existing dog... reacts with a 'new' dog....

all the best,
Susan

I am not sure about that breed, but if you do a search on yahoo or google you can learn a ton. I hear you about the big dog little dog thing! I have a Jack Russel that is about 25 pounds, and a Akita German Sheppard mix that is 141 pounds, and they look so cute together! :)

Frenchies are fun little dogs - and they are small without really being "small". I would just remember that they can't tolerate hot humid weather, much like pugs and other smush-faced breeds. And they will snore a lot. But they seem to have great personalities - I would consider a reputable breeder who breeds for health and temperment, or consider a French Bulldog rescue that may have dogs available to adopt that are in need of good homes.

Awesome little dogs and oh so cute. I want to say the breed can be prone to skin and a few other health issues (joint, heart, eye, and breathing to name a few) I think temperament wise they are great. If you go the breeder route make sure to check lines for any health or skin issues. Their faces can tend to cause more breathing trouble for some, so you may want to look for one that is not too flat. I haven't ever owned one, but I love frenchies and they can always make you smile. Little dog/Big dog, one of my favorites used to be a great dane and a dachshund that were always together, very cute to see. It sounds like your lab will enjoy a buddy and I'm sure your girls will love a puppy too.

As far as puppy advice- crate training is great if you aren't against it. Otherwise just make sure to really watch the puppy for signs of needing to go potty and also take outside after eating, drinking, playing or sleeping. Plenty of appropriate chew toys and look for a local place to take at least puppy classes that will use positive training methods. Classes are great for the basics and also to help with socialization, for some places your girls may be old enough to go too.

Have fun if you get the new little one!

Our dog trainers recommended FBD's for families saying that they are wonderful with children and generally have a kind and mild temperment. Most any purebred is going to have more issues than a mixed breed though.

Oh, and if you're able, have your kids help with a training class for the dog. It will help the dog understand who's in charge (the people) and also help your kids learn how to interact with the dog correctly and the commands/skills that the dog knows.

My son and I watch Dogs 101 on Animal Planet all the time! We love seeing all the different dogs and learn a lot about each breed. Below is a link on French bulldogs :)

My boss has 2 and says they are both wonderful with his grandchildren. He has brought them to work and they are sweet little things.
You're not nuts ~ dogs of any size are amazing!

I don't know about the breed - I'm in rescue, all my animals are rescues (yep, all 5 of them!) and I'm less into breeds than a good mutt (less prone to genetic behavioral and health problems than purebreds). However, I will tell you that I currently have 3 dogs, and they are 60 pounds, 45 pounds, and 10 pounds. I love my big dog, and I love my teeny baby, too! They don't really play together or interact much, but they know they're part of the same pack and we don't really have issues between them.
