Hi Everyone!

We've been invited to a first communion party, our first, and I don't know what to get the little girl for a gift? What is appropriate?

Thank you so much for your help!

Savings bond or money is good. A keepsake book, like a classic is a nice gift as well. I wouldn't give a toy unless the toy is a keepsake of sorts (like a Madame Alexander doll dressed in a communion dress); there are enough toys at Xmas and Birthdays.

we always get a picture frame for the first communion photo and a savings bond. the religious stuff is nice but is usually covered by god parents and you only need so many bibles, and crosses.

Wall cross for her room. A handkerchief with her initials, a scrapbook. A framed photo of the Virgin Mary. Her Communion name engraved on a book mark or frame.

Find out if she has a charm bracelet, if she does purchase a charm.

The cross, photo frame, and handkerchief are nice ideas, however after talking with other moms these are items that lots of people give, and they usually end up with many duplicates.

I like the scrapbook and bookmark ideas. Maybe not very personal, but a gift certificate for a christian store.

For my older daughters communion we received alot of savings bonds. Maybe ask the mom for ideas.

Most people give money (around $50) or a bond. A lot of people will also go to Hallmark or a christian store and get a nice picture frame, cross, or piece of jewelry.

Savings bond or money is pretty typical gift for this. The books/bible/rosary stuff is nice, but honestly is probably already covered by the immediate family or grandma.

Hi J.,

I'm sort of going against what everyone else is saying here...but I think any sort of toy / gift will be fine. My family is very Catholic, but usually, the "religious" gifts are left up to the God parents and any other "older" members of the family. Unless there are very few people invited to the First Communion party, the risk of giving duplicates (of bibles, rosaries, etc.) runs high. Amongst my own family and friends, we just mostly give non-religious gifts, just something that a little girl (or boy) that age will love. Could be a toy, could be a book of some sort, could be anything that you might normally get for their birthday. If you're comfortable doing so, you can always ask the little girl's mom what she might like...but if you're not comfortable, just pick out something you personally like and give a gift receipt. I remember for my own first communion, my aunt and uncle gave me a Nerf soccer ball--that is the ONLY gift I remember 26 years later (aside from the prayer book from my Godmother) because it was my favorite thing! Hope this helps, good luck!

I have seen lovely pink rosary beads with their own little ceramic box with a cross on it to keep it safe at Christian stores. I know I didn't get one of those and it seems like a natural gift for the occassion. Everyone always gives other types of jewelry

A book would be really nice. We received a children's version of some Bible stories, and that was the best gift we got. They may even have a children's story explaining what the first communion means?

gold cross or glod ear-rings are generally a must, but I remember when I has my first communin I liked A LOT my first camera and a secret diary (in the 80's it was in use, not sure now). Also a nice watch would do. Or a photo album for the occasion.
