How long does the fifths disease rash usually last? My daughter is 4 and I also don't know if I should send her to school or not. Her rash is extremely red and the doctor said although she isn't probably very contagious, she may not feel well. What does anyone think? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

Our pediatrician said the rash stays longer after the disease has healed and in some cases up to 4 weeks. (that does not mean she is contagious)

Calamine lotion, some baking soda in her bath water for any itch or discomfort. Don't rub baby lotion on her as the fragrances used can sometimes aggravate rashes and sensitive skin.

You will have to just grin and bare it until the rash goes away. As long as she does not have a fever or in any pain, she should be just fine.

My ped. said that once the rash presents itself the child is no longer contagious. I did inform the preschool and Sunday school teachers so if they saw the rash they would know what it was.

My kids had it this summer. They were never really sick besides a runny nose at first them that crazy rash! It lasted about 3- 4 weeks with both of my sons. It was really red and Lacey weeks 1 and 2 then weeks 3 and 4 it SLOWLY faded away...I thought it would never go away, but thankfully it did! Hang in there! They say you're not contagious once the rash is present so she can technically go to school..

It is no longer contagious once they turn red. It is contagious before. You can google it and tons of website, like web MD have lots of information on it. It's really no big deal unless you are an adult who is pregnant. It can do something to the unborn child as far as I have heard. I don't know many details about that aspect of it though. But as for the child that has it, no big deal. They aren't contagious anymore.

i think that is the same as hand foot and mouth. (rash on bottom of feet and palms of hands). it is contagious as my daughter got it from a kid at day care. my sil gave me some natural oils to put on my baby girl but it did not seem to help as it faded away after about 5 or 7 days.
