Feeding Schedule for a 6 Month Old

I am just starting solids and feeling a little confused about when and how much. Can other mothers please tell me how they work their children's feeding schedule? A few things that may help to know: I am a working mother (FT); I am recently 100% bottle feeding with formula; and I am looking to incorporate grains, fruits and veggies.

What can I do next?

Not sure how often you are feeding him his bottle but I can explain a bit of what I did when my son was that age (he's 16 months now). He was on a 4 hour feeding schedule at that time. I would nurse him in the morning say around 8am then after nursing I would feed him cereal and fruit. At 12pm I would nurse him again and feed him veggies. At 4pm I would nurse him with no other food. Then at 6pm I would feed him fruits and veggies because this is when we had dinner as a family. He would get nursed again before he went to bed at 8pm. We stuck to a pretty tight schedule because it seemed to work for my son and it was much easier for me to know what to expect and also if anyone else ever watched him (I'm a stay-at-home mother) it was easy to tell them when to feed him and what to feed him. I hope this helps some

As I introduced, I always breastfed first, then about 30 minutes later tried food. When I started out, I only offered it once a day when it was easiest, usually at night (also FT). I then had daycare offer it in the afternoon. I didn't rush it, but just gradually added till I was offering 3-4 times a day.

Since you are a working mom, I would start by offering solids about 30 mins after his "dinner" bottle. So you are there to control how much he gets and you know what he's doing , how he's taking the solids or if he's refusing and what he's doing when he refuses.

If you haven't started anything yet, it's recommeded that you start them off on the cereals first. They recommend that you try each for 3 days to make sure they're not allergic. I did a week when they were first introduced to something new. I think with cereal they recommend starting with rice, then oatmeal and then barley. After I got through all of the cereals and got them used to eating solids which was usually about a month then i would start them on the variety of veggies doing the same thing as i did with the cereals and when you get them through all of the veggies start with the fruits. I think in the beginning I started offering cereal just at night (because it was easier for me (ft)), but shortly after I think when they started veggies we started to give them cereal and veggies around lunch time. You will know when to start offering more. Hopefully you child will take to the solid foods easily, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Make sure you have the video or camera for the first time, it can be quite interesting and funny how they react. Good luck!!
