Hi everyone,

Before the school vacation is over my husband and I would like to take the kids ages 11 and 7 away for a long weekend. We are new to DFW andTexas having moved here from NY. We were thinking about renting a vacation home, but are open to any suggestions.

I need to be able to drive there, any distance but about 4 hours away would be the max as by then we all start getting on each others nerves! ...and then the trip is not so fun any more!

Thanks for your input!

What can I do next?

Go to www.vrbo.com. There are some great places to rent on Lake Austin/Lake Travis. Possum Kingdom is also really nice area. We love that lake. There's actually a hotel on it called The Cliffs, amongst other rentals. PK is only about 3 hrs away, maybe a little less.

There are so many places you can go ! And all within driving distance. San Antonio, the coast - Port Aransas / Corpus Christi (those are about an 8 hour drive though), Austin to name a couple. There's Glen Rose with the Dinosaur Valley and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. There's lots of cabins and places to stay there also. That is a neat place to go. PM me if you have any questions or need more suggestions. Have fun !

Just a little note of advice, you do not want to tent camp in Texas in the summer. My family tried that last summer and sweat our tootsies off. Ended up having to drive to a hotel at 11:30 p.m. because we were all miserable:)
The lake ideas are spectacular and we went to Port Aransas two years ago and just LOVED it.
Have fun exploring Texas this summer!

Have you thought about renting a houseboat and staying on a lake?

Kids your age I bet would love to wake up and jump off the side to swim...

If you go to the website www.bracktravel.com and click on the condos/villas tab, you will see on the side where you can click on top vacation rentals for under $500/wk, or something like that. I have seen nice condos on there near Lake Conroe, which would be right around a 4 hour drive. They have kitchens, washers/dryers, etc. in them, too.

Sign up as a preferred customer on that site, which is free to do, and you get a lot of extras, but one of them is 30 min. of concierge service anytime you book through them. This is great for driving directions, restaurant recommendations in the area, etc. - anything you can think of to ask over the phone, they can do for you. Have fun!
