We live near Dallas, hubby will be starting Medical School this summer, so we want to do a vacation before hunkering down. Have a 5 year old and want to take a family friendly cruise. What do you recommend and why? Do you have tips/tricks/etc. for making things extra fun and easy?

Thanks!

We have been on one cruise and it was a Disney Cruise last year - it was absolutely PHENOMENAL. I don't think you can get much more family-friendly than Disney! I've spoken with other people that have done Disney as well as others (Carnival, etc.) and they all agreed that while the price of Disney was higher, it was well worth it. They thought the Disney touches around the ship and getting to spend the one day at their private island, Castaway Cay, really put them over the top and the service was impeccable. The best part too is that there are plenty of adult-only areas you can get away too while the kids are having their own fun! Overall it was amazing and we were just blown away! Can't wait to go again!

Disney!! I've only ever been on one cruise, I went with my kids and hubby last year. It was worth EVERY penny. We took a 4 day cruise, I would recommend going at least 7 because the 1st and last day barely count.

What I loved about it was the secure feeling of leaving the kids in the play area - it was big and always had fun things going on. The kids have tracker bracelets on and the staff always know where they are when they are in their care. My hubby got to hang out at the sport's bar and have some down time, there are plenty of adult only areas, and very importantly although it was a Disney cruise and full of kids, I never felt overrun by other people's kids. It was probably the best vacation I've ever had. Our biggest downfall in vacations is being constantly on top of each other which can make things tense. I loved being able to spread out and do our own things for a while, diffusing any tension. My girls are 4 and 9.

We looked at both Carnival and Disney. The Disney cruise prices were higher, but I'd pay them. We went with Carnival though because it was a much better deal going to more locations - and at this point, I wanted locations. We sail in January. We're going to Bahamas, San Juan, St. Thomas, and Grand Turks...can't beat that!

And the price was AMAZING!

Would not recommend Royal Caribbean for younger kids- disorganized, kid staff not enthusiastic and welcoming. We're excited to try Disney next year sometime. I've heard nothing but wonderful things about it!
