Eye Goo

My 18 mo. old son is getting over a head cold and just got over the stomach flu - its been a tough 3 weeks at our house. Over the past week he has eye goo every morning that sometimes seals his eys shut, mostly his left - there is no pink or redness. During the day his left eye has some discharge but not much. Not sure what to do. I have called his doctor but thought that I would ask fellow moms if they have gone thru anything like this. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My doctor called me back last night and said that more than likely it was pink eye. Since he had this when he was a tiny baby they said I could use the same ointment. I did that last night (boy is it a pain to get it in) and again this morning. His eyes looked fine this morning however the doctor told me to do it at least 3 times a day for 3 to 5 days. Thank you for all your advice ladies. I really appreciate it! I am looking forward to when our house is back to "normal".

this is his body's way of dealing with infection and getting stronger in a process. unless he is in a childcare situation where they want you to treat him with antibiotics, just keep it clean.
Good Luck

Hi B.!

It's nothing to worry about but I would go to Walgreen's and get their generic pink eye drops. Both of my grandkids (1 & 3) got the same thing with the cold that's been going around. My daughter took them to the doc who gave her ointment which was difficult to put in the 1yo's eyes. The 3yo was easier to deal with. But, when she got drops, it worked much easier.

Be sure to keep your hands clean and try to keep him from touching his eyes. A warm wet wash cloth will help to get the goo out.

Good luck!

I would check it out with the doctor, just to be sure, but it sounds like what we call at our house, eye boogers. When my little one is congested, his eyes do the same thing. I guess the tear duct gets blocked up. We just use a clean, wet, warm cloth to dissolve the crusties and then clean out the eye and the duct. Until you know the cause for him, I would err on the side of caution. Good luck!

We just had the same thing happen with my 10 month old. Stomach bug, then a bad cold, and just when I thought he was getting better he had eye goo just like you are describing. We ended up seeing the dr and while it was not pink or red at all...she did describe it as a type of pink eye or eye infection which is very contagious. She put him on a prescription eye drop which I used for 5 days...the eye cleared up after a day of drops. You may want to see if your child needs the same? Good luck!

hi there - sorry to hear your little one was sick. he may have a blocked tear duct. try rubbing a clean, warm wash cloth (pretty hard)the bridge of his nose right near the corner of his eye. just for a few minutes a couple of times a day.
my son had this and after a few days of rubbing it when he was in the tub it opened and the goop was gone.
but as he has the goop keep it clean by wiping w/ a clean warm cloth. try to resist the urge to swipe it w/ your finger or any cloth or tissue you have around.
good luck!

Hi B.,

Sometimes when we have colds, the congestion and mucus tends to also seep from our eyes. This is most likely what is happening with your son. And it could be a form of allergies he is having. Most likely nothing serious since his eyes aren't pink or irritated looking.

I know you are taken care of already, but in the case that someone else looks at this thread for advice later on - whenever my children have eye discharge, I always will put a few drops of breastmilk in their eyes (if I am lactating at the time). Breastmilk has great antibodies and it is mild enough not to burn. My babies just blink through it and stare up at me like nothing is happening. I spoke to my dr. about this and he completely supported it. It always clears up the goop very successfully and it's hours and sometimes days before we see anything return - then we just do it again.

It could be allergies or you could be on your way to pink eye if it goes to both eyes call your dr. Try to keep it clean using a clean towel each time and wash your hands and the babies to keep it from spreading. Don' forget to wash the bedding too. Hope you are all well soon.

My doctor said to wet a cotton ball and put some baby wash on it and wipe the outside of the eye (meaning eyelid not eye itself)- so essentially wash it regularly. Try that and if it still doesn't go away take him in and get some eyedrops to clear it up.

I was told by my mother that I had that type of drainage without colds or anything else, but my niece has had this problem too. I was told to use a warm towel and this would clean up the goo, it does not necessarily mean anything bad, but it always a good thing to keep a record of each occurrence and let the doctor know when these instances occur. Homeopathic medicine. Euphrasia. 3-5 pellets 3x a day for about 3 days. The 1st couple of doses can be administerd within 15 minutes of one another. No food or drink 15 min. before and after taking them. Don't touch them with your fingers. All natural, no side effects.

Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy

Call them and they might give you a different homeopathic remedy than what I mentioned.

It could also simply be allergies. My son's eyes get glued together from time to time from allergies. Chirooratic also helps with that. There's tons of allergens in the air with all of the rain we've had.

Good luck.
