Experiences with Cloth Diapers

Hello! Since you are in the LA area .... look up Di Dee Diaper Service. We used cloth, but I wasn't convinced I wanted to clean them myself considering all the additional laundry that brought on top of the newborn laundry. We used the service and we loved it. My daughter never had diaper rash with the cloth diapers and they worked well. Cloth does require more frequent changing as the cloth can only hold so much pee, but ....
The service gave me a container, bags, and a scent disk which was replaced every few weeks. I put out the bag of dirty diapers one morning a week and magically a bag of clean ones appeared that day. Stark white, not smelling of bleach or chemicals, and feeling quite thick and soft. It cost us about 70.00 a month, which in many cases is cheaper than regular diapers. Let me know how it works out for you!

I used them with both kids and will for the 3rd if we have another. I used prefolds and all in ones. Their is so much out there so get some recommendations from good friends and go from there.

We use them for our son and LOVE them. We use the Fuzzy Buns and Bum Genious. Our son has never had a diaper rash. They do not recommend using rash cream regularly becasue it will build up on the diapers and make them not as absorbant. We use all natural detergents with them and NEVER use fabric softner, again it will make them less absorbant. They are a little pricey upfront but them will pay for themselves in a few months. We found that when our son was first born they did not fit him as nice as we would have liked but that was just a phase and are much better now. I can't imagine using disposable diapers when we have a just as convienant alternate. Depending on how many you buy will determine how often you have to do laundry. We used kellys closet.com but you can also find some good deals on new diapers on ebay. Good luck in making your chioce. I would start buying them now if you do decide to use them. I would buy a few each week that way it wasn't a huge purchase at one time. Congratulations on your soon to be little one!

I use the reusable ones... they are old fashion cloth diapers taken to the next level... all the convience of a disposalble, except the throwing away part. I like BumGenius best. Check them out at KellysCloset.com. I started with a sampler package (one from each brand I was interested in) and then decided which I liked the best. I recommend Kellys Closet b/c you can get a sample pack to include just about any brand they carry and the customer service is awesome. Prices are about the same as any of the other on-line stores. I use Bum Genius that I ordered from Diapers.com. I REALLY like the diapers. They are super absorbant, easy to care for, grow with your baby, and I don't even have to mention the benefit to the environment. Also, using cloth helps baby avoid a rash. And they come in cute colors!
My advice is to order enough to get through 3 days. I only ordered like 6 to start and that was NOT enough! Also avoid using vinegar in your wash-it reduces absorbancy, water-tight quality and wrecks the elastic.

I switched to bumGenius cloth diapers on my son when he was 3 months old. He doesn't get rashes very often any more. While he was using disposables he would have a rash every other week. Now he only gets them when he is teething--once.
We also use Allen's Naturally detergent on the diapers. I like Amy M's advice to you. If you want to try bumGenius diapers go to www.cottonbabies.com for the least expensive price on the diapers. You will need a pail, liner, natural detergent, diapers of the quantity that your baby uses/day and a half day, cloth wipes if you choose and a "dirty" bag to keep in your diaper bag. This was one of the best decisions we made for our son. (Also, by making the investment with your first son, you have saved at least $500/year in diapers for each new baby you will have in the future. How great is that??)

Hi G., I only used cloth diapers once with my first baby, and it was the one and only time my son ever had a diaper rash. If you use cloth diapers use vaseline on you baby between every change, there are no stay dry linings in cloth diapers so the amonia in the urine is right against the babies skin,also you have to bleech cloth diapers which means you should always do a second rinse, make sure you always use fabric softner, which I have herd makes the diapers less obsorbent, I could be wrong, plus you have to use plastic pant as well. My mom used cloth diapers on all 5 of her kids. J. L.
