I had my ds sons hearing tested today, He told me minimal hearing loss. but it just seemed he knew more than he was telling. He is redoing his tubes wednesday and going to do another test. from there he will decide on the abr. god I just want the abr done and over with. but anyway I think he knows more than he is telling. doesn anyone know how to read a hearing test? I was expecting to hear profound in both ears so nothing will shock me. I think its worse than he is telling me. can anyone tell me more than he did? and yes I know your not doctors but he is holding back on me.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

he got his tubes done today and had retracted ear drums. I asked if this was going to fix his hearing problems and the ent said I don't know. he had no fluid in his ears but the ent removed the wax and did the tubes. He said he would see us in 2 weeks.

how can we tell you more than the doctor when we werent at the appt nor did we read the results? if you think he isnt tell you everything either ask him to tell you, or ask to see another of the ENT's in the practice. dont be paranoid, be glad that it was good news!

No offense, but this doesn't make any sense to me.
If the doctor knew more than he's telling you, why would he go through with new tubes and another test? Maybe that will correct your son's situation.
You were expecting to hear that your son has profound hearing loss in both ears. You just want the abr done and over with.
Is there a chance your anxiety over the situation isn't allowing you to trust this plan?
Doctors aren't Gods. They don't always have all the answers. I really don't see any point in this doctor deliberately withholding any information from you.
If you don't trust him, get a second opinion.

Best wishes.

all you can do is get a second opinion...i dont think he would tell you minimal hearing loss if it were worse...however he may suspect something else but not say until he is sure, if that makes you uncomfortable I would have just asked him, tell him you want to know what they are looking for in the tests they plan to do, etc. some doctors feel its best to hold back until they know for sure because some parents freak out...

I've read some of your earlier posts, and I may be wrong in this assessment, but seems that your assumption has been that your son has extreme hearing loss-- which would have potentially explained his speech issues.

So I can understand why it would be confusing to hear from the doctor that there is minimal hearing loss-- as this might raise more questions for you than it answers.

I think you should proceed forward with the tests he suggests, and perhaps see another doctor for a second opinion. But if you haven't already, I would definitely get a full developmental assessment to fully understand what issues might be contributing to the speech delays -- and also explore if there are possible sensory integration issues (as a previous poster suggested in relation to the fear of water/baths that your child was experiencing).

All the best with this -- its so hard when we are trying to help our children and we don't fully understand how we can best serve them. You sound like a caring mom and I'm sure you will find your way through this. Be patient and don't let your anxiety overwhelm you in this -- just methodically continue pursuing the help your son needs. Good luck

I am sure he told you all he knows right now, and more info will come after the tubes are redone and the test are run.

If you're not satisfied with the treatment your son's ENT is giving him, then I would suggest finding another doctor.

I understand your stress - I get it - as my Nicky is going through this as well. My ENT would not be hurt if I asked for a second opinion...

I kinda freaked when Nicky had the tympanic flat line at the pediatricians office. Then the ENT said - hearing loss and a tympanoplasty is scheduled for November.

I am NOT a doctor...this is what I've gathered about reading the hearing test is a pattern of lines...the decibels heard are listed as audiometry - the hearing level is on the left (vertical portion) and the decibel level is horizontal level - the ears are listed as different colors - if the lines are low on the chart - then it appears that the patient only hears at that decibel level. If there is profound hearing loss? The lines will be VERY low on the chart and pretty flat.

Don't be afraid to talk to the doctor and tell him your concerns...before getting another set of tubes in the ears - get a second opinion.

I don't know what an ABR is..sorry..
