Dr Said to Give My 5 Week Old Juice?!?!?!

My daughter will be 6 weeks tomorrow and has had a couple instances of "prickly heat" over the past week and a half. I brought her to the Dr. (not a pediatrician .. family dr.) and he said when it's hot out to give her an ounce of 100% Juice (like juicy juice). I couldn't believe my ears and to me it doesn't sound right. I haven't given her any and I am in search of a pediatrician for her.

Have any of you ladies heard of this before? What are your suggestions? I usually undress her down to her diaper .. rest her on my chest and run the fan on low on her back (at a distance) to cool her down. That usually works but why should I give her juice? Would love to hear any opinions..
Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

i have an 8 month old and a 2 yo and i have never had my pediatrician tell me to give juice that younge unless there is some constipation and then a little apple or prune juice in a bottle could help otherwise now juice until 4mths old. At my youngest sons 6mths check-up our pediatrician told us to avoid juice and only water if it is super hot. so my advice would be an ounce of water not juice and you might even try to feed the child a little more depending on wether you have them on a 3 or 4 hour schedule but what you are doing is just fine no juice.

Geez....

Your baby should ONLY be getting breastmilk or Formula if that is what you are using.
NO juice!

I c.a.n.n.o.t believe that Doctor said to do that.

Infants... also do not have their thermostat fully developed yet or their bodily ability to regulate heat/cold... so, you dress them accordingly... and babies can get overheated.... so, remove clothing or just put her in onesies... or as you do, undress her down to her diaper.

Good God NO! An infant should have NOTHING but breastmilk or formula for the first 6 months. No juice, no water, no solids. Nothing.
If she's hot, strip her down and put a damp washcloth on her belly, back, or neck. If you are nursing, just nurse her as much as she wants. The cool thing about breastmilk is that your body knows when it's hot and it makes the breastmilk more watery and higher in elecrolytes - like a natural Gaterade!

Find a pediatrician who has been through school more recently and sticks closer to AAP guidelines.

A doctor said that?! I would switch too, that's ridiculous. Juicy juice is concentrate, it's not even juice. Not to mention the pesticides in it. Tepid bath and lots of nursing would do the trick. If anything like juice, I would use 100% organic, not from concentrate, diluted with water. I also noticed my daughter's rash gets better or goes away when she wears organic cotton (washed without chemicals).

juice for a rash? never heard of that. wouldn't do it. a tepid bath with a tbsp of baking soda will help ease the itch, though. just make sure to rinse her off after the bath to get the baking soda residue off of her skin. don't use powders on her skin in the heat either. only light natural fabrics. damp cloth and fan are good idea. keep her indoors if you can, especially if the temp is over 95*- over that and you risk heat stroke or heat sickness.

good luck!

We gave my son a bit a juice when he was about that age because he was constipated, but then we moved to baby-lax because it was more effective. I agree that the juice is only to help with hydration, so if you are nursing, let her nurse more often. The fore-milk is thinner and waterier just for the purposes of quenching a baby's thurst and then they move onto the hind-milk which is higher in fat and calories. I would do that for a few days or on the really hot days, but be sure she is nursing long enough too because you don't want it to effect your hind-milk production. Very small doses of water shouldn't hurt her.
I live in Milford, so if you need a great Ped ref, plz let me know. They take Healthy Kids and are wonderful, in Bedford. We have HK but would go even if we didn't.

Never! A 6 week old baby's tummy can't even process something like juice! Is your doctor old, LOL? Do you have an actual pediatrician for your baby? If not, you need one :)

i have never heard of giving an infant juice, all they need is in their breastmilk or formula.

This may not work for your daughter, being so young, but when mine was between 6 months and....well now at 3 1/2, if it is too hot out we give her a bottle of frozen water to cuddle.

I think you're on the right track, although I've never heard of prickly heat. When we had our a/c go out we made a little nest on the floor with blankets and sheets and laid down with a fan which was surprisingly comfy.

As with everyone else NO! But I'm wondering about how old that doctor is? If it is and older doctor, I'm sure he/she is stuck in their old ways. I know my grandmother would feed my mom all sorts of stuff at 6 weeks. She is a fine healthy lady with no food allergy's or stomach problems. But I still say no to that.

I have never heard of giving a baby juice just because of the heat, but i did give my son prune juice and my daughter also now due to constipation. An ounce of juice mixed with water once in a while is not that bad. If you do choose that route, i would not do juicy juice that is sugar. They have baby juice in the baby isle by the diaper and baby foods or do like apple and E.'s. It is all natural and much better. But that small amount wont hurt anything. I stated the prune juice at just a few weeks old with both my kids and give and ounce with water to them or just mix in right in with thier formula every couple days.

Nope! Never heard that! My pediatricians office says no juice before 1. It's not necessary and is loaded with sugar, even 100% juice.
Heat rash is really no big deal. To cool her down you can get a cool wash cloth and lay it across her back or belly. Blowing a fan on her isn't going to hurt her either, just don't stick her right in front of it blowing full blast. If she's really hot, I would suggest not holding her. The heat from your body can make her even hotter.
You really need to find a pediatrician ASAP. I would just google "pediatricians" and your city. Or check with your insurance provider. They usually have a list of doctors that are in network. Google the doctors name and you should be able to find information on them.

I wouldn't give her any juice unless she actually 'needs' it. My daughter has suffered from chronic constipation (she is 16 months now) and we started giving her a teeny bit of juice when she was 5 weeks old for that. However, it was 1/2 oz juice with 1/2 oz water once a day and only when she needed it. I really hated doing that and as soon as we found a medication that worked for her, she didn't get juice again until after 6 months.

I think it is really what make you feel comfortable. My daughter did fine with the juice, but I didn't like it. It made her a little gassier than usual, and therefore fussier, but that could have been the constipation, too. I didn't like doing it, so I quit as soon as possible. Also, if her digestions is doing well, adding juice could really throw it off, give her unnecessary gas, and possible give her diarrhea.

Personally, I would not give her any, but if you feel like you need to, then do it. You will know what is right for her. Trust your mommy instincts! ^_^

Good luck!

I don't think it would hurt her, but I don't think that it would help either. Prickly heat is a skin condition.

Try putting a cool washcloth on her bare skin instead, or bathe her in a coolish bath.

But unless she seems really uncomfortable, I wouldn't worry too much about the prickly heat either. Happens to lots of kids (and adults too!).

Good luck.

Absolutely not. No juice. I would nurse her as much as possible to be sure she doesn't get dehydrated and just dress her in very light clothing. Keep her inside, if possible, since it is so hot outside. I would definitely try to find a pediatrician as soon as you can. It doesn't appear that this doctor has a lot of experience with infants. Best of luck and stay cool!

Yikes, quacky doctor! I don't think a child that young can process water-based juices until age 1... Their kidneys are too immature. Most medical websites I've seen only recommend formula or breast milk for this reason, otherwise there could be a risk of water intoxication. Google "water intoxication, infant" for more info.

And infants under 6 months cannot regulate their own body temperature... Meaning, their bodies are too immature to sweat to cool off or have muscular shivers to warm up. Hence, they're suppose to be kept in a temperature between 73-79 degrees. I know, easier said than done when it's the middle of summer.
