Do You Ever Feel Out of Touch with Everything Outside Your House?

I don't remember the last time I watched the news and the last time I got a newspaper, I glanced at the front page and then went immediately for the coupons in the middle. I don't watch the news during the day with the kids around because I don't want them seeing/hearing what may be on the screen. If I stay up late enough to watch the late news, I usually fall asleep on the couch within the first 5 minutes. I usually find out about major news through people on Facebook who post about it or from my neighbors who want to chat about it. Am I the only mom who is clueless about world events? What do you do to keep current?

What can I do next?

I stopped paying as much attention to world events and I've been much happier. The news is too depressing, and motherhood with it's ups and downs can sometimes make you more susceptible to getting sucked into all that depressing news. If you aren't upset about missing it personally, I wouldn't sweat it.

I have the local news on every morning, always have.
My kids are usually doing other things, getting dressed, brushing teeth, etc. so I have the news on while I have my coffee and prepare lunches.
When the kids were little I just kept the sound down (I could turn on captioning) it was helpful for me me to feel "connected" even if I didn't talk to a single other adult all day!
As they got older we started to have many wonderful conversations over what was going on in the world. Even bad news brings about teachable moments :)

I prefer to feel more aware of what's going on around me, it doesn't make me any more paranoid than I usually am! I watch the news every night at 11pm or at least read the headline stories on my local news app/website (www.komonews.com). I blame it on just being nosy and wanting to know everything! There's almost nothing I hate more than hearing someone talk about something that I know nothing about...

If my kids happen to see the news (i.e. the hurricane was pretty unavoidable, as was 9/11 if you watch any tv at all!), I use it as a teaching tool, to let them know that sometimes bad things happen, how we can avoid them, and how to be prepared if something bad does happen. The hurricane news served as a valuable reminder to practice our earthquake drill at home! And most of the time, I'd rather be the one teaching my child about potential dangers and situations.

I miss watching the news. It was such a part of growing up, watching the news during dinner each night. And truthfully, I miss it. I agree that we do not watch it during the day while the kids are around. I have changed to reading the news online to stay current and have an idea on what is going on in the world. Its important to me, so I seek it out. I read the local news, CNN.com, and also will occasionally listen to NPR on the radio. Lately, friends have sent or posted good articles from New York Times, so I am thinking of checking out the NYTimes online a bit. My kids are still young and we have no time for actual newspapers. I miss that Sunday morning tradition as well. Some day in the future I hope to have my Sunday morning newspaper back. :)

Nope I have always been to addicted to the news.. I played the news in the morning on the kitchen TV.

I read a newspaper every day.. Usually in the potty or while our daughter was taking a nap..

I just have to know what is going on or I will feel lost.

I have a client that was horrified when she realized 9/11 had happened and she had no idea.. The way she found out? She went to get her hair done and everyone was talking about it.. It had happened 2 days before..

I use the free New York Times and USA Today apps on my phone in order to get my news. Three to five minutes a day (usually while in the bathroom) of scanning headlines and reading one or two interesting articles keeps me up on the big picture. And don't knock the power of FB. I knew Steve Jobs quit Apple before my news junkie husband did because I have a friend that works at Apple. The important stuff does filter through. If you're wanting more news, follow a respected news source on FB or Twitter.

I am clueless as well for the same reasons as you are. I don't have a lot of time online, and when I have a few minutes, I'd rather check email and see these questions since I always find something that helps my daily life with my kids! Radio and TV news are never turned on around my kids either; they're way too young. I sometimes take a minute on msn.com just to see top stories, but I usually have to wait for details, and then someone brings it up and I feel really dumb for not knowing any current events. Hmm. That didn't answer your second question. Maybe because I don't have any answers! Just wanted to let you know you're not alone in your ignorance- I'm right there with you!

I listen to NPR not every day but a few times a week. I get a a couple of newspapers online and I read what I can. I do not listen to right wingers as the answers they have did not work when Herbert Hoover was president (long before I was born). I am a history buff. But believe me it's more than enough for me to keep current in my profession and be a really good family person.

I read the news daily online. I use Google News. I didn't for a while and I suddenly realized I was really out of it! Now I try to do it daily so I know what is going on!
