Disease Control Specialist for Infants and Children

My 25 weeker had staph infections until she was out of diapers (around 3 1/2 yr old). I don't think she ever had any in her body but always on her diaper area. We tried everything to get rid of it. If she took any kind of medication orally it only made it worse. We went through cases of aquaphor which is the only ointment we could find that worked. Also when I gave her a bath (sometimes a couple of times a day depending on how bad it was) I dumped 1/2 a box of baking soda in the water. It really seemed to help it dry out. It is rough and heartbreaking but she eventually outgrew it. If you wanted to seek a help with Disease control could you ask your pediatrician for a referral? If not, I would call another pediatrician's office for any referrals or check your insurance to see if there is someone on your plan you could check with. Also check with a dermatologist. My derm was the one that suggested we try aquaphor to see if it helped.

I understand your concern as well and agree with the other mama, it's not uncommon. Has your doctor discussed treating the family? It involves applying Bactroban (prescription antibiotic ointment) to the inside of the nose twice a day for 5 days. If this does not remedy the problem, the treatment may have to be repeated. This is what I do & have never had it progress to a serious skin infection.

I have read up some of the effectiveness of hydrogen perioxide. I had a rash on my arm and the dermatologist gave me two different oinments (on seperate occasions) either worked. I tried hydrogen peroxide and it cleared it up. Check it out - let me know if you try it and it works!

Staphylococcus aureus is a very common bacteria found on the surface of your skin. It is found in pimples, etc. I would not worry too much. Just keep an eye on it, if you are concerned. Look out for a sore that does not seem to heal and start weeping pus. Just be sure to clean the area thoroughly.

I don't know a doctor in this area, but I will tell you I got mrsa and it is staff. I had a doctor at the emergency room tell me to eat yogurt at the firt sign because yogurt has active bacteria that distroys the bad bacteria, so when I see the fist sign I get my yogurt. It works. When I tell other doctors about this they think I'm crazy, but I don't care because it keeps me from having to take medicine. Just give it a try!!!!!!!!! C. from Denton

I totally understand your concern, but it is fairly common to have recurring staph infections. My cousin in Houston, her husband and kids are my closest examples. Staph is a good thing - when it's on your skin fighting other "bugs." If it enters the body, then it is not good. ALWAYS washing hands (before meals especially) and keeping open wounds clean and dry are key. Google "recurring staph" and you will see a lot of info. Here is one web site I looked up for you.
