Dip Recipes

Hi everyone,
My kids love to dip raw vegetables, especially carrots. I am very happy with this since I can't get them to eat cooked veggies. Does anyone have any good dip recipes that are healthy? I really do not like to buy the one's in the store, like Marie's, because there's a lot of fat and sodium in most of them. I would like to try making my own.
Thanks!

no specific recipes but I would suggest looking up bean and veggie dips on-line. You will have more options then you could have imagined.

Fat is a very necessary macronutrient that many of us are very misguided about. We need fat, especially our kids, for good brain/nervous system development.
Also note that many nutrients need fat present for optimum absorbtion. This is why a fat free salad dressing is pretty useless!

What we need is good quality fat, not poor quality ( cottonseed oil, corn and soy oils which are mostly GMO).
making your own dips and dressings from scratch are a good way to ensure you're getting good quality fats and oils.
Use organic whenever possible, cold pressed oils.
Extra virgin olive oil and walnut oil are great for salad dressings.
Organic grass fed butter and ghee and coconut oil are great for other cooking. Choose full fat organic yogurt over lowfat or skim.
Your 4 year old can help you whisk up a healthy dressing. Involve her and you'll have a dressing/ dip fan for life!
Fat does not make you fat! Focus on quality and stay away from processed, chemicalized packaged food whenever possible and you'll be healthier ( and thinner) as a result!

To get my daughter to eat chicken (fingers) we let her dip it in ranch dressing. But to make it a little healthier I mix it with plain hummus. Hummus is extreamly good for you (made out of chickpeas). I'm sure it would taste great with carrot sticks too. So it's just plain hummus and ranch dressing, I use more hummus than dressing. There are a lot of dressings you can make with plain yogurt as well. Basicly use it in place of sour cream or mayo when mixing in a dry seasoning packet. Hope that helps.

You can substitute plain fat-free yogurt for sour cream in dip recipes if you strain the yogurt through cheese cloth overnight.

Just empty a large container of fat-free plain yogurt into two layers of cheese cloth. Wrap the cloth around the yogurt, and tie with kitchen string to make a packet. (it will be messy so do this over the sink).

Place the cheesecloth ball into a strainer, over a bowl in your fridge, and leave overnight. In the morning you will have a bowl full of whey ( the liquid part of the yogurt) and a fairly dry and concentrated ball of yogurt, that has the constancy of sour cream.

Mix well-squeezed chopped frozen spinach( defrosted). dehydrated onion flakes, garlic and salt to taste, and whatever other spices you like... refrigerate for a few hours. yummm

Here is a sample recipe from my file... Just have fun experimenting..

Ingredients:

* 1-1/2 cups plain lowfat yogurt
* 2 garlic cloves, peeled
* 3/4 cup finely chopped fresh basil
* 2 teaspoons olive oil
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* Assorted crackers or cut-up vegetables

Preparation:
Place yogurt in sieve lined with cheesecloth or coffee filter set over bowl; cover and refrigerate overnight. Transfer drained yogurt to bowl and discard liquid.

In 1-quart saucepan, heat 2 cups water to boiling over high heat. Add garlic and cook 3 minutes to blanch; drain. With flat side of chef's knife, mash garlic; add to yogurt. Stir in basil, olive oil, and salt. Cover and refrigerate up to 4 hours. Serve with crackers or cut-up vegetables.

If you like, substitute fresh parsley or cilantro for the basil.

1 cup grated cheese (Monterrey Jack or Mexican blend)

In small pan, heat salsa until bubbly. Add grated cheese and stir constantly until cheese melts (less than 1 minute). Serve! (Hint--you may want to double or triple the recipe because it makes just 4- 2 Tbsp servings)

I make my own dip to save a bit on fat. I prefer the light sour cream, but you can also use fat free then I add in a package of dip. My favorite is Wise Green Onion - it's delicious with veggies. You can also dip veggies in hummus, which is low in fat and has some protein in it.

A great healthy dip is Hummus. You can make your own very easily.

1 16 oz can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans
3-5 tablespoons lemon juice (depending on taste)
1 1/2 tablespoons tahini
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons olive oil

Just add everything to a food processor and process. The actual amounts of each ingredient are up to your own tastes. I like to use a bunch or roasted garlic cloves instead of the raw. You can add other things like fresh parsley or roasted red peppers, or whatever you like. If you have the time, use dried organic beans, soak and cook them, and use instead of the canned.

Hummus is a very healthy option to the usual dips. Enjoy!

Hi J.,

Here's a recipe for a black bean dip (which is also great with tortilla chips and a margarita after the kids go to sleep!):

1 can of black beans, drained and rinsed
1-2 tablespoons of chopped red onion
1/4 cup of cilantro leaves
juice from 1 lime
salt to taste
olive oil -- start with a couple of tablespoons and add as much as you like

blend all ingredients in a food processor and adjust seasonings to your liking. Enjoy!

I make a really yummy dip from sour cream, mayo (or non-fat yogurt), sun-dried tomatoes, minced garlic and fresh basil. I combine it all in the food processor.

A lot of kids also like Hummus, and that's super easy to make. It's just canned chickpeas, tahini, garlic and olive oil.

Oh, and my Dad also makes an AWESOME crab dip that would be great - cream cheese, sour cream, canned crab, canned shrimp, worchestershire, garlic...and anything else that sounds good. Add some cheddar cheese and heat it in a small crock pot. It's a whole meal!

I don't have a recipe, but how about a spinach dip made with yogurt? We also make a cucumber dip by shredded cucumbers and yogurt, a little seasoning and it is yummy.

Hi J.,

We actually buy hummus for our veggies...it is a great dip for veggies and spread on toast or sandwiches and it is a healthy alternative to the fatty dips.

Hey J.,

This is more of a salsa, but it's sooo good & so easy I thought I would respond anyways. You can either use a food processor which makes it that more easy or chop everything by hand which can take a bit longer.

2-3 Tomatoes
1 onion
3-4 cloves of garlic
salt
a handful of cilantro

Mix tomatoes, onion and garlic, add salt to your liking, add cilantro. When the kids are older you can add some hot sauce and/or a hot pepper.

I would purchase Jessica Seinfeld "Deceptively Delicious" cookbook. She hides puree veggie in the diffent dishes. Everything I made was delicious. My favorite is the chicken salad with the puree cauliflower. We also love the brownie with the puree carrots/spinach. Good luck. Denise

We do to alot of fairs. There's always some one selling "dip mixes", which are a mixture of dried herbs (no salt). You mix them with sour cream, mayo, cream cheese, yorgurt, or olive oil.

I see you've already gotten lots of suggestions, but I'll just add what I do because it's so simple (no prep!). I mix plain yogurt, dill, garlic powder and sea salt. I just make a little bit fresh every time we have raw veggies and my kids love it.

Real simple and tasty:

Buy a small container of sour cream or fat free yogurt. Add to it an envelope of onion soup mix. There may be a low sodium one out there. Voila! You have a dip.

Bon apetit.

Hi J.,

I know how hard it is to get kids to eat right, and as a mom you want to do the best you can by them. It's great that they like raw veggies - that's the most nutritious form! What do they like besides carrots? You might get away with some things that are lightly steamed and still crunchy, like green beans or snap peas.

I am one of those people at the fairs that sells dip mixes. As a Meal Planning Consultant for Homemade Gourmet, I help busy families learn to make great-tasting food, fast. We provide freshly packaged herbs and spices, along with simple, easy to prepare recipes. Many mixes are multi-use and can be used for dips, marinades, soups and more. By adding your own fresh sour cream, cream cheese, mayo or yogurt, you can control what you are serving, without added preservatives.

Kids usually like our Tropical Dip, Raspberry Velvet Fruit Dip, Apple Pecan Yogurt Dip, Mock Spinach Dip, BLT Dip and Sun Dried Tomato Dip. You can use most of these to also season chicken and pork for a quick and easy dinner.

I like to dip raw veggies in hummus -- it's healthy (beans -- all that protein!) and not as fattening as creamy dips. You can make your own easily -- here's a recipe I like:

2/3 cup sesame seed paste (tahini) (you can get this at health food or middle eastern stores)
3 tablespoons water (or more)
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 cups cooked chick peas (you can use canned -- dry chick peas are a b***h to cook! Just drain and rinse the canned ones first.)
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Combine the sesame seed paste, water, lemon juice and garlic in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth and creamy. Add the chick peas and blend until smmoth. Push down with a spatula as needed. You may want to add additional water if the mixture is too thick.

Scoop out into a serving bowl and season to taste.

Makes 4-8 servings.

I sometimes add more garlic, but that can make it very strong. I sometimes sprinkle the top of the serving dish with paprika and drizzle with olive oil if I'm presenting it on a veggie platter at a party, for instance, so it looks pretty.

I think most kids like hummus -- I know my son does, and has since he was really little!
