Dave Ramsey and Other Sources for Financial Organization

While my husband and I do not typically overspend on a monthly basis, we would like to have a better handle on our finances. We have heard great things about Dave Ramsey, but both of our local libraries never have the books available (lost or checked out). I was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions as to plans to follow, as we would most likely be creating our own plan from a few different ones to work for us anyway. Also, if we were to purchase something from Dave Ramsey himself, instead of checking something out from the library, what would you recommend? A specific book title, the dvd set, etc. We do not want to waste money on something that would not be beneficial to us, or overspend by buying too much.

We are trying to set a detailed budget plan, and would like to get this done before our second is born (less than 2 months away!), but do not have all or our receipts saved, so it has been a little difficult to see what exactly we are buying. Any suggestions on where to find a good example of a detailed budget? We are not looking for specific numbers, but more specific categories. We are a military family, which means our income is slightly different than average, so it would be a bonus if there was something specifically designed for the military. Any help getting headed in the right direction would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

dave ramsey also recommends "the millionaire next door" just fyi :)

i really would spend the $$ on the financial peace university class. seriously. i don't think that there's ever "too much" you can learn about finances, and as the poster before me states, that class changed our lives as well. it really teaches you a LOT -and it includes all the forms your heart could desire. that's what we did, so i can't attest to anything else :) good luck!

Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace University" literally changed our lives. We went from living a little better than paycheck to paycheck, to being bill free, and able to pay more than 1/2 down in cash on our dream home in just over 18 months. It has been an amazing transformation for us as a family, and I am thankful every day that my mom decided to get it for us as an anniversary gift, even though I initially rolled my eyes at her. Check online to see if any courses are being offered near you (schools and churches often offer it), or you can do the online version yourself.
Good Luck!

I loved the book "The Wealthy Barber" and "The Millionaire Next Door". They don't provide budget but they are great books and quick reads.

We used Crown Financial Ministries - crown.org - and found it very helpful. We only used the free information/forms. While it is Christian based, I think it would be easy to take or leave that part as you like.

I am a financial planner and can give you some sources but do you use USAA? Here is their budget sheet: https://content.usaa.com/mcontent/static_assets/Media/USA...

They also have something called the "free financial assessment" that can help you look at your financial picture holistically. I don't always recommend USAA for all products but thought this might give you somewhere to start and USAA is geared towards military families.

Congratson the new baby! C.
