i need some help. I am having a hard time transitioning my 10 month old daughter to foods other than baby food in a jar. If i give her pasta (pastina), ground meat, or anything that is not jarred food, she doesnt seem to know how to swallow it. She has eight teeth, and chews great, but then she never swallows it. Is this normal? Has anyone experienced this before? She does great with the gerber 'puffs', those little 'cherrio' like things that dissolve in your mouth.

What can I do next?

I'm just going to take a guess and say maybe she isn't completely ready yet. It's good that you are trying... but maybe she just needs a little more time..

Most people I know, including myself, were told no solid food before one year old, so maybe it's just a little soon for her. My daughter preferred pureed and baby food for a long time after that. It's way too soon for meat unless it's a tiny tiny bit pureed in some veggies-too h*** o* her stomach. Don't rush it, you'll miss those convenient jars when they're gone! :)

M.,
I have a nephew who had issues with the TEXTURE of what he ate--he still does not like meat very much. Give her time and concentrate on soft, cooked veggies, yogurts, cheese, bananas, etc. If there's not a medical reason--she'll come around. I promise you won't have to pack a jar of squash for her to take to her prom!

I really would not worry about it too much. My daughter did the exact same thing and I cried almost every time it came to feeding her. Then around 1/2 to 2 years old she just started eating sandwiches and every other table food. I just kept offering her table food every time and tried not to make a big deal about it.
I did talk to the pediatrician and they reccomended a nutritionist to assess her diet and see if there was any type of medical swallowing issues. The nurtionist first reccomened creative way to feed her like sneeking in a small bite of ground beef in her baby food or letting her "dip" her food in sauces (thougn she was a bit older for this)

Really, I would talk to your pediatrician and give it some time and try not to get upset or worried. All kids eat at different levels.
Hope this helps!

If she's 10 months old she may not be ready for it or the texture is still too foreign for her yet. She's fine with jarred foods for now. If you want to help her transition then try some Gerber Puffs or Gerber Wagon Wheels. They dissolve in the mouth and that will help her get used to the texture in her mouth.

Hi M.. Kids are funny that way. Maybe you should just stay with the "finger" foods that get soft and are easy to swallow for now. Start with mashed potatoes, cerals like real cheerios, and ticken up those baby foods with baby ceral (like rice). More texture like custard style yogurt, small curd cottage cheese, small soft cooked veggies, real oatmeal, even scrambled eggs will help too. It's a transition, not just a step. She can swallow, she just doesn't either want to or know to. She is still under a year old and you've got tons of time. Don't rush it, and don't make food a control issue or dinner time stressful. It's a war you don't want to start! Best wishes and good luck!

Keep trying. She's not even a year old yet and it's hard for babies to get the hang of swallowing. My daughter didn't like the textures that weren't smooth even at a year or so. She still isn't a big fan of meats, (she's 2 now) but she bites and eats eveythign else. In fact, she chews and swallows chewable vitatmins like nobody's business. Just keep at it. She'll figure it out eventually.

She may not have developed that reflex yet. Is she gagging a lot? I would take to the doctor and see what he says. Some babies are not ready for table food till 1 year old. 8 teeth, wow! My baby finally got his at 12months and he has four!

Maybe the other solids you are offering are too tough to chew. My son (13 mo) can still barely chew tender meats, and he'll eat anything. Perhaps larger things that can be gnawed on? Big pieces of bread/bagel/pretzel so that she can hold one end and chew on the other. And don't worry, she'll get the hang of it eventually. My son pretty much could only eat puffs and baby food at that age, and now he eats most anything. It changes fast, though, so keep offering.

You may be rushing her a bit. Give it a few weeks and try it again. There is no rush to get her onto table food. She has the rest of her life to eat meats, etc. My son was almost 15 months before he started really eating table food, and he got teeth early also. Take your time and enjoy this stage. It goes too fast as it is!

This may sound crazy but how big are her tonsils? My son wouldn't eat anything except soft foods for the longest time and we couldn't figure out why, they I saw the size of his tonsils for the first time when he came down with strep--- his tonsils were touching!!! We went through 3 battles of strep throat in 3 months after that, and each time the size never went down......he had to have them taken out.
Also maybe she doesn't like the texture of the foods, that is another possibility.I have a friend whose little one is 2 and he still wants babyfood. She has a therapist coming to the home helping with this. The doctor recommended this. So you may want to give your daughter a call and discuss any options with him.
