Cutting My Hair for Locks of Love

Hi mamas. I have been growing my hair out for the last year and a half for Locks of Love. It is finally down to my butt and I am getting really sick of it. It is getting really hot out, and so I have to wear it up every day, but since it is so long and thick, it takes a long time to do even the simplest hairstyle, and my arms are starting to hurt from keeping them raised above my head to shampoo/comb/style. I do have to wear my hair up for work, but then on my days off, I would like to be able to have it down in a cute style without having to fuss with it too much. So I am looking for recommendations for a really great hairstylist who can not only follow the Locks of Love guidelines, but then give me a really cute new style. I don't have a ton of money, so I'm not looking for someone who is super expensive, but I don't just want to go spend $15 at SuperCuts. I am in far East Mesa close to US60 and Ellsworth, so if you know anyone in Mesa/Gilbert/AJ/or even Chandler, that would be much better than driving all the way to downtown Phoenix.

What can I do next?

Evelyn White or Tina Gonzales (mother/daughter) at Illusions on the SW corner of Main and Lindsay behind KFC. I highly recommend them and they are VERY reasonable....I believe they only charge about $15.00 for a cut. ###-###-#### They are both very talented stylists. Tell them N. sent ya!

Hi A.. When I grew my hair out for locks of love, I went to Dolce Salon and Spa in Chandler (right by the Chandler Mall) and they cut my hair for free! They send the hair out for you and it costs you nothing. I would call to make sure they are still offering that, I did it in October 2006. Good for you!

I used to work at Ulta (the one in Ahwatukee) all the stylist are great. If you go on a week day Mon.-thur. Your cut will be free if you donate to locks of Love. There are a few Ulta's on your side of town I would try one since the haircut is free any way.

Hi A. - *waving at you*

I am at Ellworth & Guadalupe. There is a new place called Tammy's Trendz right behind Sonic. There is a stylist there names Courtney. She is really good and I happen to have two of her 50% off your first visit coupons!! She cut and permed my moms hair yesterday and it looked really really good. You can have one of these coupons if you want it. Stop in the store, or give me a call.

PS - I already donated a 13 inch pony tail to locks of love, and am more than 1/2 way to my second donation! It's a great thing you are doing!

Let me know if your interested - J. at www.everymotherandchild.com (SE of Ellsworth & Guadalupe) or call ###-###-####

Hello, A.! I am G. Hasbach and I am reviewed here on mamasource at Hair Artistry by G.. I have assisted in the donation process for locks of love on a number of occasions, and although it is a big change to go long to short, I have eased donors into easy to maintain, fashionable and trendy looks when we are all through! Yes- the summer is a great time not to miss all the length. It will be much cooler! I would find it a privelege to be the one you choose for this wonderful cause (and who knows, you may REALLY like what I create just for you!) I Charge 32 dollars for haircuts. You can reach me at ###-###-####. By the way, I am at Higley and Southern... Mighty convienent, eh?

Hi A.,
I feel your pain. I did the same thing about a year ago. I have a 20 month old and got tired of her hands getting caught in my waist-length hair. My hairstylist cut off about a foot (which I sent to Locks of Love). I now have a sassy chin-length bob that I love. Much easier with a kid.
My hair girl is Brooke Hamblin and she has an in-home salon off of Greenfield and Warner. She is a single mom as well. She is young and fun and has a great sense of style. You can reach her at ###-###-####. I think she charges around $30 for a cut.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy your new do!

I have had very good luck at any of the Arizona Hair Co. They are a step up from Supercuts and Cost Cutters. If you ask for the Manager to cut your hair you should be fine. They only charge 15 for a haircut. I use to go to the one on Gilbert and Brown but my hairdresser left. Hope this helps.

Hi A.,

I am new around here and live in Queen Creek so I don't have a stylist to recommend, but anyone can do it. My daughter(6 yrs old) and I have both donated. Just make sure you have at least 10 inches. More is always better and it sounds like you have that. When making your appointment ask if they give discounts for Locks of Love haircuts. Most places do. Some will even mail it for you. If they don't make sure to bring a bag (i.e. ziploc) to put it in. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good luck with it. It makes you feels so good to do it.

What a wonderful thing to do! I just cut my hair 15 inches last summer and also donated it to Locks of Love. I think it was Supercuts where I got it cut & they didn't charge me :)
You will love it once your hair is cut! I am contemplating growing my hair out again & cutting if for Locks of Love, but honestly I love the short hair :)

I have a great hair stylist at Southern and Val Vista that I have gone to for years and love her. She isn't too much more than Super Cuts but always does an excellent job and has knows how to properly cut hair for Locks for Love as my daughter is currently growing her hair for that purpose also. Her name is Dena and the salon is called Friends in Style. You can reach her at ###-###-####. Good luck!

Hi A.!
I did this a year and a half ago - and it was the first time I had short hair in 20 years, so I was really worried about the style. I have a woman in Ahwatukee that does my hair, she is a breast cancer survivor and she does her Lock of Love cut & styles for free! I don't know if you want to go that far, but if you do I'll give you her info. She spent a lot of time on my hair and gave me the cutest short do! I absolutely LOVED it!
Enjoy this amazing gift you are giving, Locks of Love is a fantastic organization!

Call around to a few salons and most will do the cut for free if you are giving it to Locks of Love. I know there is an Epic Salon out in Mesa and they do a great job with cutting and styling.

Hi A.,

I actually just cut my hair for locks of love two days ago. I had it done at Great Clips and if you don't care if they send your hair in for you they will actually do it for free. I went to the one on Baseline and Country Club in the Fry's parking lot. It was great. If you want to send it in yourself then the haircut is around $12. Good Luck!
