Hi All!

I have a 20 month old and a 6 week old. The oldest is adjusting well it seems. I have a question about when people switched from a crib to their toddler bed. We have the crib that will switch to the bed, just not sure when to fo it. I was thinking on or around his 2nd b-day...but should it be started sooner or later? Thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi all!! Patrick went to his big boy bed with no issues. He was so excited..he got a book and told me to sit and read with him. Then he started to jump in his bed...very cute, but I told him no :) He has slept though the night every night and not rolled out...I hope this continues :) Thanks for all the advice!!

E.

Hi E.,

I switched my son to a big-boy bed (a little tykes race car bed) when he was 21 months old. We had another child due in 3 months and we needed the crib for her.

We had a party to commemorate the big step. We decorated the bed, had a cake, and invited over some family members. We also brought him to the store to have him pick out the sheets/blanket he wanted for his new bed.

Giving your crib up for another child can be stressful, so we took all the attention off the crib/baby and put it onto the new bed and our "big-boy". It worked really well. He never asked to go back into the crib, even when the baby arrived.

I hope this helps.

I did it at a year, simply because when I put her in her crib she would make her self throw up! I guess she didn't like being confined.

Hi E.-
I have a 15 month old son and switched him over last month. It took about 2 weeks for him to get used to it but now he is fine. Good Luck!

My suggestion is to wait as long as you can. Your life as you know it will be over once the kids can get out of bed and come in your room. We did it at 2 yrs b/c we were expecting a new baby and needed the crib. I regret it. If I could do it over again, I woudn't move her until she could climb out on her own. Best of luck!

My daughter is 15 months and we just switched to a toddler bed, as long as he will stay in it, I would make the switch!

Hi E.
I have a 2 yr old and a 9 month old. I was very nervous about the whole crib/toddler bed idea. My boys were going to have to share a bed room. When Danny grew out of his craddle (started to wiggle around) We knew he needed to be in a crib, but Christian (the oldest) was still in it. Our crib also converts to a bed but the more I thought about it, with the drawer thats under the crib, it's still pretty high. So we took Christian to the store and had him pick out a "big boy" bed. It was a regular toddler bed but it was "his idea." When we got home he wanted it put together right away, he wanted a nap in it. So he wanted to get out of the crib and knew it was for Danny now because he's a baby and he is a big boy. My biggest fear was Christian wanting to "love" his brother while he was sleeping and throw blankets in the crib and such. It's been 6 months since then and we've had No problems. I may of gotten lucky, but it has worked out fantactally. They are both on the same schedual even. They are both in bed at 8:30 and wake up between 7:30 and 8am. They "talk" to each other in the morning before I can get to them and I listen to them babble over the baby monitor. It's very cute!

My daughter is almost 3 and I switched her when she was around 18 months old. The Pediatrician said at her 18 mo appt that it was about time to switch her out of the crib. She does just fine in the toddler bed.
Just keep an eye on him just in case he tries to get in the crib with your baby, if they are in the same room.
