Hi Moms,
I thought I remember reading on a mamasource request some suggestions for a mattress cover to help prevent SIDS and allergies. I was hoping to purchase one for my sister but couldn't find the request in the files. Does anyone have a good recommendation on a crib mattress cover for an older mattress? Are they usually organic as well? Thanks for the help.

Hi J.~

We were given a BabeSafe mattress cover we were expecting our 2nd son. It is still on his mattress. If you do a search for it online, you can find more info about it.

We also have the AngelCare monitor.

Good luck!

I would recommend the Naturpedic organic mattress cover. Go the the website safecribbeds.com for a ton of information on SIDS and mattress', etc. You can but the Naturpedic cover at babies r us online or just do a google search for it.. it is about $60

there was a journal article I just read about those preventing SIDS mattresses and the studies do not support their use - they don't prevent it at all. As far as the allergies all the mattresses I saw when I was shopping were vinyl/plastic type covering that automatically prevented allergy stuff. When I bought my mattress it was guarrenteed for 15 yrs, so unless your mattress is REALLY old, it should be fine without a cover. There have also been studies done that show exposing the child to allergens such as pet hair early actually prevents allergies from forming. So, I think you should find a different present!

I know that this is not directly answering your question, and I apologize for that.
My cousin lost her 2nd baby to SIDS. As a result, my mom bought me and her (for her 3rd baby--they family is ok now) a Angel care monitor.
It senses movement and if no breathing or movement after 20 seconds an alarm goes off.
If SIDS is the concern, then I highly recommend this monitor. There are two versions, and yes they are pricey--but also priceless.
Best to your family.
