hi mamas,
my 3 yr old son has a cough that started shallow on friday and is now "barking". my 1 yr old also had it. between the 2 of them and the last recent sicknesses, i have wasted a lot of $$ in cough medicines. seems there are none that really work!
i love using homeopathic remedies, and they seem to do the job during the day, but am in need of something more to get my son to be able to sleep at night.
thought i would ask if ya'll knew of any cough meds that really work before i go out and spend more money.
any recommendations??
thanks!!!

If the cough sounds like a bark, then it may be the croup. There really isn't much you can do about it but put them in a steamy room, or at night take them out into the cool air. Croup is mainly a constricting of the throat, not a particular illness. If they seem to have a hard time breathing, take them to the dr. The cough itself will take a while to go away.

Rescon DM...it is behind the counter at the pharmacy. Just ask for it. It totally works and I use it on my 3 year old

Hi S. -

Tina is right - if it's a bark - like a seal - it's possibly croup. My son has had it 3 times since October. It was very scary for us in Jan - he woke up at 1am and could barely breathe and had that very distinctive cough. We took him to the emergency room and they gave him a steroid that worked within minutes. We did both cold air and steamy shower - but because he was still having a hard time breathing - we took him to the emergency room.

As for cough medicines - we bought pediatric Robitussin. It seems to work well. I recently got an email that said to put Vicks Vaporub on their feet and put socks on. I usually ignore and delete these types of things - but after my son started coughing at night and I didn't want to give him cough syrup - I tried it. I thought it wouldn't hurt. I heard him cough one more time about 20 minutes after I applied it - and then he didn't cough all night. I did it again the next night and he didn't cough at all. I'm not sure if it helped - but it at least didn't hurt!

I hope your son is feeling better soon. Congratulations on your new addition this summer!

Welcome to Wylie.

We use The Tussen from Wal Mart. Seems to do the trick most of the time.

My son had the rough cough and doc said he needed more than the Tussen. ( I told my son it sounded like he was trying to cough up a furball. Made him laugh and giggle for a little while)

He is on a nebulizer and taking an antibiotic.

I wish your son good health.

The only thing...and I mean the only thing I have found that works for my kids at night is Delsym. In fact I use it myself now whenever I have a troubling cough. It works for 12 hours which is most of the night.

Hi S.,
My pedi has told us NOT to give cough suppressants at all. I usually give my girls benadryl to see if that will relax them enough to sleep...it is so hard to know what to do and what not to do, but when my 2 year old was about 18 months...her cough changed and she started with a fever, I took her right in to the pedi and she had pneumonia. The pedi said giving a suppressant could have masked the symptoms???? Just a warning.

I am not sure about what kind to use but when my one yr. old was "barking" I found out that it was croup and had to put him on antibiotics... might want to take him to the doctor. Hope he is ok and good luck on your search for good cough meds... I know I cant find one!

Just saw this a little late---but in the future, if it's barking, then try Aconite homeopathic. Calms my guys down immediately and they begin sleeping.

If it's not barking, then dissolve honey and lemon in warm water. CNN recently had an article about a study that says this is MORE effective than anything over the counter. It's always worked for my family.

Hope all is well. Good luck with the new little one---boys are SOOOOO much fun to raise.
