Concerned About Excessive Spit Up

I have a 5 mo old son who is solely breast fed, who seems to be spitting up excessively. Sometimes it is obviously excess milk, sometimes its "cottage cheese" and sometimes it is extra slimey like mucas. I have tried probiotics and we have started rice cereal with him in the evenings only. I am concerned because he cries and cries like he is in pain and I do not know what to do any more.
My twin boys spit up but not like this and I am doing the same thing with my 5 mo old that I did with them.

Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So the baby is doing much better since I have adjusted the position in which I feed him. Since I sit him more up-right he has not spit up near as much as he has. It is not 100% , but it is a great improvement. I think I have overactive let down and a boy who likes to "play" ...go figure!

Thank you to all of you who responded!!

I would try to take him off of the cereal to see if he is any better. My daughter who is 6 years old now- could not handle any of the baby cereals- she would spit up alot and vomit. We took her off of the cereal and she stopped. So we suspect an allergy to the cereals. Our the third child- we did not give any cereals to her ever and we never went thru the problem again. Hope this info was helpful- Stay at hom mom- of 4 children 1 8 year old bory and 3 girls- 6,2, and 3 months.

Sound like reflux. Your pediatrician can prescribe Zantac or Prevacid and it does wonders. Reflux is painful so hopefully you can get your little one some relief soon!

Hi J.!
Here is an article about what it normal for spitting up and what is not, written by an MD. Basically, if your baby is still gaining weight and healthy (in other ways), there's nothing to be worried about, but there are some things you can do to make them more comfortable until they grow out of it.

On the other hand, what you're describing might also indicate some allergies. What YOU are eating, the baby is also eating, so you might want to cut some things out of your diet to see if that helps (note: it takes a week usually for the baby's system to clear, so cut for a whole week). Ask around in your family and your husband's family for any odd allergies that might have affected family members when they were babies. But if there's nothing, try cutting milk and/or soy - the major allergies for babies. Read your labels carefully - those two seem to be in EVERYTHING.

Good luck!

A 5 m.o. digestive system should be developed enough so he is not spit up this much. If he is spitting up enough to concern you I would call his doctor just to be safe. He may be dealing with some reflux issues or GERD. You don't want you little guy to be in pain so if there is an issue, it is best to get it taken care of quickly.

It sounds like acid reflux to me. It usually starts at birth and gradually gets worse until 6mths, than tapers off at about a year, but of course you should talk to your pediatritian about that. He may prescribe zantac. In the mean time, try getting him to sleep in his swing or bouncer, so that he stays semi-upright to keep the acids from coming up so much. I went throught this with my little girl, so I feel your pain. Hang in there!
