My 9 month old is learning to crawl but is more interested in cruising and climbing...So much that nap times and sleep times are interrupted by his need to reach, climb and scale, then ultimatley fall, most of time hitting his head on the bars. He used to be a great sleeper/napper but now his schedule has gone array. I've removed the bumpers but now think I should put them back for fear of him really hurting himself. Any advice on crib saftey products or ways to calm my little spiderman?

What can I do next?

I have twin sons who are almost 19 months old and I still keep the bumper on their cribs. The one won't sleep if you take it off, so this might be the problem with yours also. He loves to bury his head in the corner and snuggle up with it and just has so many problems sleeping without it. I'm really worried about when we go on vacation this year because I don't know how he'll sleep not having it! Good luck, I hope all of the advice you have been given helps!

I also have a nine month old and a three year old.
I had to put the bumpers back on the crib so my child didn't hit her head. As for sleeping, every child is different and goes one thier own schedule which will change with time. Now I find they like to play either before or right after thier nap so I leave some toys in the crib that are safe.

I would put the bumpers back on, my one daughter was the same way and she is three now and still climbs anything or anybody. She was out of her crib at 16 months because of this. I would give her plenty of cruising/climbing time before nap then when i put her down for her nap i would give her a special toy to keep her hands busy till she fell asleep.

I got a type of netting through Target.com. It is called BreathableBaby™ CribShield™ System. It is good for keeping them from climbing and also for biting on the crib. My Son is 18 months old now and it is still on his crib, because he is also a climber. He was walking by 10 months. So I know how you feel. But the safety shield really is helpful.

Being a little spiderman is the sign of a very active child! You are going to have your hands FULL! I have a 14 month old who was/is the same way, climbing is his passion! Most kids I know cry when they fall down, say off a ladder, and then don't do it again. Mine cries for a second, gets up, and climbs the ladder again! We put my son in a big boy bed at 6 months because of the climbing! He has done fantastic in it! We decided it was better than to worry about him falling from the top of the crib bars! We started just with naps and taught him to get off the bed right away. Now, when he wakes up, he slides out of the bed and goes over to the baby gate we have in the doorway and will call out for us. As for the not sleeping thing, that will come and go for the first 2 years I am told. About every 3 months, when they are learning a new skill like climbing, crawling, etc, they will be so excited to practice, sleep will be disturbed. Enjoy your little spiderman and let him explore and develop those gross motor skills, just watch and be there to catch him if you need to!
