Clarification Needed on Clothing Sizes

It has been a while since I truly went shopping. I'm not a huge fan of the styles now days so I just tend to not shop much. I also know that I've gained some weight and never really lost it all from my last pregnancy but my pre-pregnancy clothes still fit really well. I went shopping with a friend yesterday and found some cute stuff that I decided to try on. I picked up sizes that I currently wear in several shirts and pants. I tried on 1 shirt in my current size and it was too small. I tried on the same size shirt in a different brand and it fit fine. Same in jeans. Are sizes in clothes supposed to be universal between brands? It's so frustrating. I had to get one shirt in 2 sizes bigger than I normally wear. Now I know of another reason I don't go shopping much.

What can I do next?

All the sizes are different...from store to store or brand to brand. Sometimes even different within the same brand. It is frustrating. You really have to try on every single thing and take into account shrinkage if it isn't a high quality brand. Hang in there and just go when you are in the mood to try things on!

Nope! I have a pair of jeans in a 0 and in 7 and everything in between. Sizes are all over the place.

Nope never the same, even in the same brand and even sometimes in the same style in a different fabric. You have to use numbers as a starting reference and not really think about them being your actual size.

Clothes get made in China, Japan, sweat shops in all kinds of countries and not even the same brand is the same size from garment to garment. We have leotards at the store I work at. Some are the same brand and same size but one will be 4 inches longer than the one next to it. Sadly every garment must be tried on.

I hear ya! When you grab things to try on, you need a size smaller and larger than the size you think you are. Each manufacturer has a different idea of what a "10" is.

They aren't the same for two reasons- first, each brand maintains proprietary sizing, which may or may not be close to universal size charts. Second, in the manufacturing process, the less expensive the garment, the higher the tolerance for variance in the manufacturing process.

I don't find much difference within a brand but from brand to brand it is all over the place.

I sometimes wonder if it is different due to which country it is made in.

Goodness no! Sizes are all over the place. One stores 4 is anothers 8 or even 10! ITs called vanity sizing and it is getting way worse. I am almost always a 6 and sometimes 4. But I have been for 12 years now and am at least 10 pounds heavier now than then. And currently I have been fitting into 2s at some stores which is ridiculous because there is no way that I am a 2.
Here is a snippet about it from a blog I follow:
“Vanity sizing” is a term for the industry’s practice of inflating the dimensions associated with a particular size tag over time. What was considered an American size 8 a decade ago will pass for a size 4 today. Size inflation becomes more extreme the further back in time we go. Marilyn Monroe’s voluptuous size 12 body would probably fit into the equivalent of what we know as a size 6 today.

How this phenomenon started is anyone’s guess. It is thought that vanity sizing is “designed to satisfy the buyer’s wish to appear thin“. This boosts self esteem and thereby ensures the sale of a garment. Designers and manufacturers were quick to realize that there was money to be made by satisfying perceived insecurities.

It depends on where you shop and quality of clothes.

White House Black Market I'm size 2 in pants. XS in tops
Neimans. 0-2
BeBe tops large. I have perky 34dd's
Ann Taylor. 2
Go figure... You have to adjust for the brand, store and style

It really helps to get a personal shopper who is good at fitting you!! Highly recommended!

They should be universal, but they are not. I worked in many different retail stores and found that you ALWAYS have to try things on. Another reason I cannot stand shopping as well.......UGH, it should be so much easier.....:)
