Car Seat Question - Long Beach,CA

We have the Flex Loc Car seat and I'm completely unhappy with it. Partly because both my husband and I have 2 door vehicles (not 4 door) so getting it in and out is an issue. That's not my main concern/problem.

When I put our newborn in it (he's 9 pounds), it's very difficult to latch him in. It's quite frustrating. Additionally, since he's barely latching in now, I can't imagine what it's going to be like when he's just a smidgen bigger.

My questions are these:
Any recommendations for a (new) car seat that would install into a 2-door car?
Also, when he's in the car seat, his head tends to bob down (like his chin to his chest). Is this normal? (I even have a support system in the seat but it doesn't seem to do much good.)

Please help. This car seat thing makes me very nervous especially if I have to drive with him alone in my car. I want to make sure he is safe.

One last thing, we only have the ANCHORS in our cars; no middle seatbelts so I'll need to find a car seat with anchors.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

M.

Hi M.,

I am no where near an expert on car seats either, so I called the local hospitals and made and appointment to have them install and show me how to install the car seat properly. Also you can call your local fire station/police station and they to can direct you where to go...Hang in there. When you call the hospitals also ask them about the type of car seat you have. They recommended the one I have now for my 2yr old.....Hope this helps

I went thru this same thing when I had my 2 door ford explorer, and to be honest the car seat situation gets worse the bigger your son gets. I finally gave up and bought a 4 door car, I had to the 2 door car was impossible. Not only did I have a hard time getting him in the car, but then the passenger seat could not recline at all. My advice to you is get a 4 door, it will make life so much better.

I'm sure you'll get some great advice here but I would also recommend making an appt. with your local CHP. Most offer a free inspection and may be able to give you some tips on your current seat or some tips on something else that may work better in your car. There is a great site that I can't for the life of me think of but you input your car and it spits out recommendations! I'll try to find it and add it to this repsonse if I do. ( I looked, I can't find it but found a few other sites that you can link to below)

We have Britax seats, Marathon, Roundabout and Regent and love them all but we don't have a two door so I'm not sure what would work best. ** His chin should NOT be hitting his chest.

Hi M.,

Get in touch with the CHP or SafeKids and have the seat inspected, 8 out 10 seats are incorrectly installed! And based on your description it sounds like it's not at the proper recline. Also check out www.car-seat.org and ask the same question. It's a great forum with tons of techs on board who can help steer you in the right direction in regards to car seats. Good luck and it will work out.
