Car Seat - Fairfax, VA

Anybody have any good ideas of what to do with a car seat we no longer use. My youngest is about to grow out of his infant seat and there really isn't much to do with it. You can't sell them at yard sales because of potential safety issues and they can't be donated for the same reasons. I hate to just get rid of it, but I don't know if there are any good ideas for something to do with it.

Just thought I'd check. Thanks!!

So What Happened?

Thanks for the great suggestions. I didn't think people would want the seat for fear of it being in a car accident even though it hasn't been and is in great shape. It sounds like I've got lots of options which is good to know.

Thnaks.

It's fine to donate it if it's in good condition and hasn't been in an accident, or recalled. I've donated 3 of them and received one toddler size that works just fine. Join www.freecycle.org and post it on there. Someone out there is bound to need it.

I bought our car seat used from someone on Craig's List. You can post it there for free as well.

If it's never been in an accident you can put in on a website like Craigslist.com or some newspapers will let you post an free add for giveaways. (I think the Washington post does this).

As long as it has never been in an accident you could post it on freecycle. Look in yahoo groups for one near you...lots of people here are looking for either a second/spare one, one to use when family is visiting and in the DC area, even looking for ones to send overseas to extended family.

FREECYCLE.ORG
It is a fabulous way to give it to someone in your community in need. Not just for carseats, but for anything! It's simple and fast and someone will come pick it up. All you need is a Yahoo account. Which is also easy.
Good luck!

Hi J.

As long as the manufacturing date is within 5 years, you can sell it or give it to good will. You can find the date on a sticker on the side or bottom of the seat (sometimes it is under the fabric cover). You can also give it to the local police department, they will use them if they ever have to take kids from dangerous situations and need one for the cop car. Or you can give it to a womens shelter for use as well.
