Hi Mamas,

I'm recovering from my 3rd c section and am now at 4 weeks post partum. Everythings been going great with recovery besides this horrible stabbing burning pain I get every day on the right side of my stomach.. I've been seen 3 different times by my OB who just kept reassuring me it was normal and some patients get more pain on one side or the other. .Well finally at my 4 week check up he had a sono done on the area which showed fluid build up and a cyst on my right ovary. He then went on to prescribe darvocet for the pain relief and started me on antibiotics.

So I've gone from 7.5mg of vicodin to darvocet which is a mild pain reliever. Well as of now I'm still in the worse pain which has now gotten worse from him lowering my pain meds to a medicine that does nothing. I've called him about the pain and he refuses to give me anything stronger which has made me sooo upset because I feel as if I'm not being bellieved about my pain or if he just doesn't care. The pain is so bad I can't stand or walk longer than 5 minutes and I can only sit comfortably in one chair in my house that relieves the pain. With my second c section my recovery was much easier and he still prescribed pain meds for 6 weeks. I just don't know why he cut me off so soon when I'm still having so much pain. IF it' the pain is being caused from a cyst shouldn't it be removed to give me some relief? I feel as if I'm going into a depression from all of this and pretty much in shock my OB cut me off when I'm still in severe pain. I hate complaining and when I do finally complain to them, I get no where. What else can I do? I'm tired of this pain and ready to get back to normal. .Please help! Thank you

What can I do next?

You may have had an organ perforated (not the intestines - or else you'd be dead already), have severe adhesions and scarring which can never be removed unless you want to be opened up again (not recommended), or it could simply be the fluid build up.

I'd get a second opinion from a general surgeon and not a OB surgeon.

It sounds like maybe the cyst is trying to shrink now due to loss of hormones, etc. from the delivery. That can be really painful, so I've heard. If that's the situation, I do think that probably there does seem to have to be a certain amount of "tough it out" time so the cyst has time to shrink, etc. and I don't know how risky it would be to go back in and remove it at this juncture, although I'm sure you could talk about it with your OB.

The other issue is that you feel you aren't being heard. I would take one more stab at your doctor. Go in for an appointment and communicate your concerns and ask what can and will be done now and in the future. I would hate to see you have to switch doctors at this juncture, but I suppose going into someone for a second opinion wouldn't be a bad thing either.

It really does sound awful so I hope you get it figured out! Hang in there!

If you have a cyst on your ovary, it could rupture. I would go to an ER.

Perhaps your doctor was concerned that you were beginning too dependent on the vicodin and placed you on a lower pain management plan to reduce the risk of habit dependency? Im sure there has been a crack-down and new guidelines imposed on physicians in regard to prescribing controlled pain medication. Also, extended use of certain pain medication can result in stomach bleeding and ulcers. 4 weeks of continual use is a pretty long time.

You probably need to resolve this with your cuurent doctor because going to a new one and asking for a prescription for vicodin will look like your shopping for pain medication. I know, you're not... But that is how it will appear to someone totally new to the situation.

If you are not happy with your doctor
1.switch, . get a second opinion.
2.If it is too pain ful go to the hospital you delivered at and ask them for help. Be for warned about the hopital choice they will probably just call him to see what he wants to do.
3. Go to the ER or emergant care facility.

Do not be afraid to be a pain in the BUTT. this should not be like this, and you rely on him to help you and he is droping the ball.

Good luck, and I hope it gets better SOON!!!

Get a second opinion on treatment options beyond pain relief. Your OB is rightly concerned about dependency issues, but should have at least brought up a treatment plan beyond prescribing pain killers for you.
If you get the cyst and fluid taken care of you should get better...
Good luck!
