Breastmilk to Vit D at 11 Months?

My sister has an 11 month old who has been breastfed exclusively. She intoduced solids around 6 months. She started losing her milk supply only to discover that she is pregnant, her first was 9 months when she found out. Her dr. recommended formula which my sister really did not want to do. She did it fo a week and then decided to try to get him more calories by bfing more frequently a night (not getting enough sleep for a prego woman IMHO) and offering more food during the day. She works ft. Anyway, her son turns 1 June 26th. My mom and I thought she should just put him on vit d milk a month early rather than doing formula and then having to transition to milk. Her husband took son to the dr for a rash and the dr rec formula until he's one. That's like three weeks away. What do you think? Is it ok to leave him on milk?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I posted this question, because my sister was stressed after the dr's visit and recommendation for formula and asked me what I thought. I have no desire to be "right" about the situation, as someone suggested. I was merely seeking more information! My sister didn't want to do formula because she didn't want to do two transitions. One to formula, and then to whole milk. Thank you to those for your helpful responses. He seems to be thriving and went to whole milk very easily. I will tell her to keep an eye on the rash. She decided not to stress about the milk vs. formula issue. She is trying to get him weaned from breastfeeding as we speak so she can have a little break before baby two comes.

OMG 3 weeks really? Im mean seriously people will think that ludacris to put him on milk so soon but my daughters started at 10 months and preferred table food to formula. If they are getting adequate nutrition, frutis, veggies, grains, milk then i wouldnt worry. My pediatrician (who has children as well) said it was fine. Nutrition is nutrition , who cares whether its formula or milk!

Hi M.,
It depends on his weight and what other foods he is eating. That's probably why the pediatrician wants to keep up with formula. It is closer in nutrition to breast milk.
I exclusively bf my first child because she was allergic to milk and soy at the time. I found out that I was pregnant when she was 20 months old and kept bfeeding until she was 22 months old. At that time we got lucky and she outgrew her milk allergy. I was still wary and she didn't really drink milk until she was 2.5 years. We just supplemented with calcium rich foods.

I started my 2nd child on milk at 11 months just due to not being able to keep up with supply. I don't think 3 weeks will make a difference unless he has a reaction to the milk. I would use organic milk if you can though.

Good luck,
E.

My husband and I had a vacation planned shortly after my son turned 1 and wanted to make sure he was well-established on milk before leaving him with my parents for a week. We started weaning from breastmilk to cow's milk about 2 weeks before he turned 1 and our doctor said it was perfectly okay. We replaced one feeding a week and he was completely weaned a few weeks after his birthday. However, while it may be "fine" to transition a few weeks early, your sister needs to do whatever she feels most comfortable with.

My sons were drinking whole milk by 11 months. I just transitioned it a little. But they all were drinking 100% milk by 11 months. I think it is kinda silly to think of 12 months as some magic number that they can suddenly be able to drink reg whole milk. If she doesn't want cow's milk, go with goat's milk. It is a little better for digestion.

I started switching my 1st daughter to whole milk at 10 1/2 months because we were going out of the country on vacation when she was 11 months and my dr told me not to mess with bottles and formula in another country and she is completely fine. I started swtiching my 2nd at 11 months as well. At 11 months the child should be getting most of his nutrition from solid food anyways.

I never started milk until after a year. My older son (who was formula fed after four months) took follow-up formula. My younger son breastfed until he was three years old. I would have to side with the doctor on this. A child's stomach is not ready for milk until (s)he is over a year old.

I'm sure it's fine - just make sure it's WHOLE milk. But I have to wonder why your sister is so opposed to formula. She could just do one can of it and be done. What's the big deal?

Both my boys stopped their bottles on their own and went from formula to whole milk at 11 months. i dont know why they both did it at the same age but they are just fine. We started putting it in a sippy cup and never looked back. I would say save the money and go for the whole milk, as long as the rest of his nutritional needs are met its not a big deal. Yes the doctors "recommend it", but they don't say they HAVE to have it that way. Good luck

we switched our daughter to whole milk at 10 months and she is perfectly healthy and did great on it. plain and simple the formula thing is a money racket. so long as he doesn't show any intolerance to the milk he will be just fine without the expense of formula.

i suggest leaving her alone about it. it's her child, it's certainly not going to matter in the long run, three weeks give or take. who cares? it sounds like you and your mom are ganging up on her, for no other reason than just to be "right". look inside yourself and examine your motives in posting this on a website. why is it so important to you? i say stay out of it.

It's totally fine. 3 weeks is nothing....there is no need to spend money on formula. She needs to stop breasfeeding ASAP b/c she is pregnant!!! It is very h*** o* your body to do both and she needs to make sure she's strong for the baby!

I think it's perfectly alright for her to start him on milk. My son's doctor told me to start my son on milk at 11 months old. So I did. He was perfectly fine.

The sooner you introduce milk the more likely they are to develop sensitivity. If he got a rash, it may mean he already has one (many kids do). I had to keep my son on formula until he was over 2 because the milk gave him horrible excema and digestive issues, though it started with just a rash on his trunk. Now he drinks rice milk. I wouldn't leave a child on milk who's clearly having a reaction to it, it can get worse.

Also....rashes very commonly are caused by food allergies and I noticed every one of the other post ignored this fact from your question. Be careful, because many people don't realize the symptoms of an allergy/intolerance until it's really bad or too late and then the child is suffering.
