Our 15.5 year old Golden Retriever crossed the rainbow bridge this weekend, and we are struggling. My 10 year old daughter is having the most difficult time as she was truly her best friend. Can anyone suggest a good book for her to read about losing a pet? I need to find her something to help her through this. Thanks in advance. :( :( :(

So sorry for the loss of your family pet. I know that it is hard to lose a furry friend. If you google child death of family pet, there are a host of resources that pop up that might be helpful. This website has 10 books that they recommend: http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/themesubjectbooksby/tp...
Perhaps you can look at some and pick something for her age group.

Cynthia Rylant's Dog Heaven.

It's a picture book, but it's touching and comforting enough to make an adult cry. I got it for my 30-something friend a few years back, and it meant the world to her.

So sorry for your family's loss. It's so incredibly heartbreaking. I haven't read any books specifically for loss of a pet, but "Badger's Parting Gifts" is so sweet if you can find it at the library. Wishing you peace as your family grieves. Comforting hugs to your daughter. :(

All Dogs go to heaven was a favorite at our house.

I am sorry for your loss. It is very h*** o* the family and each person reacts differently. I do wish the best for you all.

Another vote for Dog Heaven by Cynthia Rylant. It is perfect. My son pulls it out occasionally at bedtime and it always brings a tear to my eye and its been 2 and a half years since we lost our beloved, Guinness. Sorry for your loss; it does get easier.

We lost our kitty on Mother's Day. It was devastating. We had a small funeral for him in our back yard, and the boys made things to put on his grave. I suggest treating it much like the loss of a human family member.

If you go to the library, the librarian in the children's section will likely know the very best books for this subject. I'm so sorry for your loss. Our furbabies are truly like a shooting star in our lives....only with us for a short while, but so beautiful and memorable.
