So just wondering if I really have to do goodie bags for the kids or not? They will be decorating sugar cookies to take home so I didn't want to do goodie bags as well. Also what order should the party go if you are serving lunch as well as cupcakes? (eat, presents, cupcakes decorate cookies)

What can I do next?

They are not a requirement, to be perfectly honest, I rather dislike it when my kids get goodie bags! IF I ever do a take home gift, it's usually a little tub of play dough or bubbles with a bow tied on it or something.

The take home cookie in this case is their goodie.

We usually do presents last, and also for people that need to leave early won't miss out on anything, so it would go:

activity/games
eat
birthday song/ cupcakes
decorate cookies (frosting sets, parent wraps cookies while presents)
presents

NO! Please do not do Goodie bags.. The parents will love you..
We need to remember when we were kids and did not expect a prize for attending someone else's party..

Instead have your child actually write and mail a real thank you note to each person that attended and or gave a gift. Kids love receiving mail..

I have always thought it was silly to make goody bags for kids coming to a birthday party and refuse to do it.

The purpose of having a get together is so others can help celebrate your event. Not get something in return.

HATE the goodie bag. Always have. I think a decorated cookie in a cello bag is a great take-home reminder from the party!
As for the order--depends on the time of the party a little
Party from 2-4: decorate cookies, eat, cupcakes, presents
Party from 12-2 eat, cupcakes, presents, decorate cookies

Really whatever works best for your party & time. I just always try to keep the "eat" closest to the mealtime.

There is no need to do goody bags. I always do, but I refuse to buy those cheap plastic toys to put in them. I buy hotwheels, crayons, and things like that that will actually be used and played with. I give goody bags as a thank you, because I hate thank you cards, I think they are a waste of time and paper, but a little toy or treat says thank you in a way a child really can appreciate.

Oh, for the 'good old days' when you went to celebrate a birthday, took a gift from you to them, and came home. Am I old, or what? I am but it seemed so much more respectful of the one having the birthday. I wouldn't do the goody bags. You're giving them cookies.

I wouldn't waste time and money on goodie bags. You never know how many will show, so you might have RSVPs for 8 kids but 12 show up, or you might expect 8 kids and two show up. Either way, it is no good! Give the decorated cookie. Since you are doing lunch AND cupcakes, that is far more then enough. At my son's party we did an ice cream cake and played. Everyone loved it - even the parents!

I personally would by bags to put the cookies in so they can take them home and call it quits.

Eat, games If any, cupcakes (sing), presents, then make cookies
but really what ever order makes the party fun for the kids and flows good for you. My son is allergic to egg so everyone saves cake til last, but that is what works for us.

always do the presents last. if you do them first that is all your child wants to do is play with his new stuff and won't pay attention to the guests. Usually get the toys broken from guests too and then your child doesn't get to enjoy them first. We usually eat the food first, do games and activities--last game is usually the pinata--I give out bags with a few pieces of candy--usually a few of the mini candy bars so everyone has the same amount of candy bars then they put the candy they collect from the pinata in the bags. Write the childs name on the bags when you pass them out or before the party if you know who will be there. That way when they lay them around the house they know which ones are theirs and don't argue over who's bag is what. The small sandwich bags or quart size baggies are perfect for this. They go home with a full bag of candy and are content and happy even though the bags aren't that big. The little loot bags at the dollar store also work fine. I buy the cheaper candy for the pinata--look for candy that don't break easy. tootsie rolls, laffy taffy, gum, smarties, the small suckers don't break as easy as the bigger ones, mini skittles, nerds, runts, and stuff like that. Candy bars tend to get mashed or broken. After the pinata we have the cake, then open presents 15-20 minutes before the party time is over.

2-3 hours is plenty of time to have a party and you will be tired after it's over especially if you have been entertaining them the whole time.

Our parties usually go like this schedule.. have learned through the years what works well as far as keeping the kids busy.

arrival time- 20 minutes--get names and phone numbers of each parent that just drops off their kids for emergencies as some will go shopping or run errands while the party is going and you need a contact number for where they will be (usually a cell phone). The kids play and explore all over the house to get familiar where things are and kids always want to see what toys your child has in their rooms or play room. I do have them pick up the toys before we start the rest of the party.

after all the guest arrive they come to the kitchen and eat pizza or whatever snacks we have for the party. this is usually over in 10-15 min.

once they are done eating we start playing games for about 1 hour. pin the tail, a target game, twister, pinata, Disney Trivia if we need to fill more time as it is a longer game. We have a lot of games and always plan for more activities than you need. Art and craft activities are good to fill up time as well. Figure each activity takes 10-15 min. Kids move and play fast so their games end pretty quick so have to move on to the next activity right away before you lose their attention and they start running all over the house.

about 30 min before end of party we have the cake then open presents.

Have fun and the more prepared and organized you are the more fun the kids have.

Most goody bags are not a great thing for the parents. AND at our 6 year old's birthday, we had light sabers for all the kids to take home - we're talking over 20 kids - and some of them STILL asked about goody bags!.

Some of them wanted me to get them new light sabers because theirs didn't make noise/light up anymore (because they were played with during the party - but of course, they still worked as a toy light saber, they just needed a bit more imagination), or wanted 2 lightsabers because they could be hooked toegther. I didn't have any more. They weren't expensive, but it was a big party, so it was a big deal to get the ones I did have.

Anyway - I was SHOCKED. None of these kids were old enough to know they were being outrageous, and I am sure one of the kids who asked isn't being raised in an "overentitled environment." And yet....he's learning it's acceptable to have these kids of expectations.

As a parent, I think the sugar cookies are a GREAT "goodie" to take home. And...regular food, then cake. Cookies last, as they are the "take this home" piece is a good idea.

HAVE FUN!

decorate cookies 1st.....so they can "set" to make the trip home AND because that's when you'll have the most focus out of the children. You could actually have them wash their hands upon arrival & sit down & do it. Once you have several kids going, then everyone will want to join in!

Activities, fun & games.
Food.
Presents.
Cupcakes.
& then home!

I was thinking that maybe you wouldn't want to leave the decorating cookies till last, since they will probably need to sit awhile before they can be packed up to take home. I have often done this kind of party for my daughter - we usually did the activity first, then pizza, open gifts, and finally dessert.

you dont have to do goodie bags. i do homemade ones that come with a page to color, cool glasses, a fruit snack pack, a couple dum dums, a twisty straw and maybe a small toy. mind you my daughter is 3 right now so i work with the age range.

what i do food wise is. eat lunch then serve cake and while they are eating cake we open gifts.

You don't HAVE to do goody bags...completely your call. I would let them decorate the cookies as they are arriving and can finish up after lunch. You can then do presents or cake next (presents first allows lunch to settle and can actually be started before EVERYONE is done eating).

Yes it seems most parents are in agreement...LOL! ;) I agree also to do the cookies first. If you want to do anything else with it my only suggestion would be to get some of those individual cartons or bottles of milk, with maybe a crazy straw if you're feeling zany, and send it all home in a little bag. I think goody bags should be fun and useful...not plastic junk that no one wants. It depends on how many kids you have of course but you can get little bottles of milk at the grocery store or gas station for cheap-ish. Plus, Horizon makes the cartons of milk that don't need to be refrigerated so that's easy too! Have fun!
