Bed Wetting Alarm Needed

The one we used for my oldest son was a Malem Ultimate I. It has an alarm and vibration. It was quite a few years ago, but it actually worked! It's not cheap, though and it took a while a little while. It started with me hearing the alarm (because he slept right through it-he's a very deep sleeper) and waking him up. After a while he started waking up to the alarm, and then on his own.

Hi there! We have used the Malem alarm for our son. I'm including a link to a website that has them. Our son's is yellow. I'm not sure if there are differences, but that is the one we have. My husband did all the research on them. Anyways, because my son is such a "sound" sleeper, the alarm would wake him up about 50% of the time. The other 50% it was us that heard it and woke up before him. The alarm is really loud and does different sounds. Our problem was that if he didn't wake himself up, when we went in there, he was a nightmare to try to get up and get to the bathroom, partially because he was still asleep. He wouldn't even remember us getting him up in the night. I think the alarm is great, but it wasn't the ideal choice for us. We finally went back to making sure he went to the bathroom right before bed and he wears pull ups. They have some ok ones for older boys that have skateboards etc. on them and even have boxer style ones. We find he wets a lot less now that he is wearing them...not sure why, but it does at least save from having to wash all the sheets/blankets etc. everyday. We have talked to our doctor and she agrees it is a deep sleep issue, there is a med available that they can take if going to a sleep over etc. and not wanting to wear the pants, but we haven't had to try that yet. Meds would be our last resort.

I think using those alarms is cruel. I had one when i was young, and it really left a horrible impression on me. I would suggest seeking out a Dr that specializes in bed wetting (like a urologist NOT a psychologist or a pediatrician). Many times bed wetting has to do with legitimate medical issues, or high stress levels in the home, not an ability to "train" your child.

Have you considered that it's a medical problem? My niece had to take medication through her early teens to prevent bed wetting because of a body chemical she was lacking that prevents bed wetting at night. She never had a problem as long as she took her medication 30 minutes before bed time.

My 5 year old was still wetting the bed and I ordered the Malem model M04. It has several tones and also vibrates. I clipped it to his underwear and then used a pullup over it , so I did not have to wash sheets or a pad. I still have his baby monitor in his room, so when it went off I could hear it, and I would run to his room and make sure it woke him up, take him to the bathroom, and then put on dry underwear and pullup. It teaches their minds to know when their bladder is full. It took about two weeks of getting up with him when the monitor went off, which was tiring , but he has not wet the bed since!!!Seriously, it is well worth the $100.00 or so that you will spend. I think it is called Melena. It is about $100. It works great. The alarm sound something different so that over time it doesn't become a sound track for your childs dreams. You have to use it for at least a solid 2 months for it to take. Good Luck.

We tried the alarm, but our son also slept through it. Another pediatrician recommended an alarm that vibrates. By coincidence, my son mentioned the other day that he'd left his phone in his bed and the vibrating alarm woke him up, despite the fact that he sleeps through every other sound in the world. We are going to try setting the phone alarm to vibrate and seeing if it will wake our son up to go to the bathroom. I think that, like anything, he has to have the desire to stop or else he'll just turn the alarm off and go back to sleep :). Good luck - I'll let you know if this works for us.

I had a friend whose child wet the bed if they had any dairy products of an afternoon/evening. Ice cream, cottage cheese, milk. You might try this and see if that could be the problem. He may just have a small bladder, or sleep extra sound, but it wouldn't hurt to try the no dairy for a bit and see if that could be part of the problem. The star that played the part of Little Joe in Bonanza said he had a bed wetting problem clear in high school. His mom tried to shame him into not doing it, but he said if you are asleep you don't know you are doing it, so how does that help. He didn't want to it embarrased him. Don't know if that helps your situation about the alarm, just wanted you to know I guess it is more common that a person thinks.
