I have been feeding my 8 month old baby food, he has been really constapated. I dont feed him baby oatmeal becaouse his pidiatrition said to throw it out becaouse it makes them constapated. Then I read that apple sause does to, So i dont even feed him that, And he is still constapated. i was thinking that it could be that i mix his food not together but i give him lets say green beens and sweet patatose so he dont have to just eat one thing. I was just woundering what else i could do becaouse i dont want to stop feeding him solids. pluse i only feed it to him once a day should he be having more. what has worked for you

I always switched back and forth between fruits that would constipate and those that caused loose stools. Once the food has been introduced with the 4 day rule, I would give him apples or bananas one day and the next give him peaches or something. If i noticed the poop getting too firm I'd stay away from the constipators, and if it got too soft, I'd give him more of them. Prunes always worked really well, I usually only gave half a jar and it would do the trick.

Here is a website article that talks about feeding a baby with diarrhea. The top list that "helps" are the ones that can cause constipation. The bottom list to "avoid" will help get rid of constipation. Once he is regular, if you rotate them around and not feed too much of one kind in a day, he should stay pretty regular. A trick I used to remember the main ones is that if they start with a P, they are foods that will make them poop. (pears, peaches, plums, prunes.) Made it easy to remember some quickly when I needed to give him something to keep from getting more uncomfortable. The whole website is great and really helpful. Hope it helps you!

Also, I think I was doing 2 meals a day about this time, but you don't have to. Just give him more solids as he seems more hungry. I would do a fruit for breakfast and a veggie for lunch or dinner. And I would give him one thing I had already introduced, and for the other meal I would be introducing something new. But I would stop introducing new things until his constipation is better.

Fruit always gave my daughter loose stools so you might try a little fruit with the meals or inbetween meals.

My son is 2 1/2 yrs old & we've been dealing with this issue since he was 6 months old. His Ped said to stop the rice cereal and add more prunes to his diet. So luckily he liked prunes. He also recommended prune juice. I watered it down a bit, but he still didn't care for it. Around a year old, I had to take him to the Ped due to him being so impacted, that it wouldn't come out on it's own. It made me feel completely helpless, to see him screaming with such pain. When he was almost two, the doctor prescribed a liquid medicine that I added to his cereal. He wasn't constipated anymore... in fact it was quite the opposite. He's doing much better, but every once in a while, he'll have some episodes, but I know give him an over the counter laxative for toddlers. It works over night... it's great! I hope in your case, the prunes work and you won't have to go through what we did. Good luck!

I believe that your son is constipated because you are giving him 2 things at one time. When introducing foods try one at a time for about 2days. If things seem okay then introduce another, again for the same amt. of time. You should be trying him on sweet potatoes', carrots, etc first, then introduce him to fruits. The reason you only feed one at a time is because his little taste buds have to get used to it. As for a bkfst. feed him rice cereal and this can be done again prior to bedtime. Don't mix two types of veggies together because you then don't know what veggie is causing the constipation. As for oatmeal I would leave that until later, it is a fibre but right now he's to young for it. If you want to blend and experiment then give him a veggie at lunch and dinner for maybe 2 to 3 days. Then go to a fruit for 2 to 3 days. You have to give it time in order to see how his bowels are going to work. It doesn't hurt to give him prune juice, mixed w half water. This will help him to go as well. Apple juice (regular) mix with half water in his bottle. Not the applesauce. Then gradually start mixing it with less water maybe wkly. until he's on the full applejuice. I'm speaking of not baby applejuice but applejuice in the can. The problem you are having is trying to introduce to much to soon without seeing how his little tummy will react. Always one item at a time until you know what works then you can mix them. Hope this works for you. Good luck and if need be because of the constipation you can use a glycerin suppository to help him go. There is no need to use the whole part, just maybe half. Insert it into rectum and gently squeeze his cheeks together for about 3-5min. You will see him start to push and he will go. It is such a relief for him and you. I had to do this with my grandaughter who had a hard time going just from going from nursing to formula for my daughter. It works everytime.

Every morning we would give our daughter some pureed prunes either mixed in a little plain full fat yogurt or not. she never had a problem with constipation with this. Good luck to you.

Try giving him some watered down Welch's white grape/cherry juice. My son was very constipated, even when I was only nursing him, and this is the thing that worked best for him. I would give him like 2 oz of juice to 6 oz of water in a sippy cup, and as long as he got that every day he was able to have regular bowel movements.

The water works for sure you need to follow a balanced diet though make sure you are not feeding too many bananas for constipating foods prunes work great as well but applesauce works amazing it shouldnt constipate your young one at all its natures laxative!

Could be splitting up the meals a little will help..half at lunch, half at dinner. Then make sure he has plenty of fluids. If he is eating he should be drinking too while eating. Make sure he has a couple of oz. of water or formula to help wash things down.

Hi, my son had similar problems when he was younger. Our nurse told us to give him 4 oz of chamomile tea with 2 tsp of sugar. He loved the way it tasted and worked every time. He is now 22 mo. and it still helps when his stomach is upset. It works with adults too. Hope your little feels better!

Another biggie for constipation can be bananas. And while it isn't very common some little ones get constipated from the rice cereal. If you aren't trying oatmeal you can try an alternative. The baby cereals don't have that much fiber left in them since they've been processed into mashed potato flake form. Also too much dairy can cause constipation in kids. Once you've tried the foods separately it shoudl be ok to mix them. Think about foods that bug you and your husband because since he's your son he may have some of the same tendencies as you.

At his age, in my opinion, he should get three meals a day. The biggest one that leads to constipation is bananas and dairy. Add more foods that begin with P... like pears, peaches, prunes, peas. You can also give them tiny amounts of Metamucil. For my daughter who is always constipated, my Dr had us put in 1/2 tsp of Metamucil in a sippy cup of water. That helped a lot. You can always call your Drs nurse to get more help.

There are many questions I would like to ask because it is difficult to answer without more information. How much water is your child drinking? What else are you feeding your child? Is it organic? Normally a child starts eating fruits first and then on to vegetables, do you give any fruits? What brand of baby food are you giving or do you make it yourself? Oatmeal and applesauce are not constipating but actually the reverse so why do you listen to a doctor that doesn't know what they are talking about or why are you not looking this up yourself instead of taking the advice of someone that has no knowledge of nutrition (many Doctors have very little knowledge about nutrition unless they have studied it or have a degree in it). Cars come with manuals, dvd players come with manuals, everything under the sun comes with manuals but children do not. I commend you on asking on this forum to get information from mothers that have more experience and another thing to do would be to ask some older women that you know and everyone you come in contact with and learn as much as possible. Then learn a little about nutrition and you will help create not only a healthy baby, but a healthy family also.

You can try pear juice too but my big reccommendation is Ultimate Aloe Juice. It's safe for little ones and it's all natural. It will also supercharge his immune system. Great stuff. All my kids are on it.
Try the strawberry kiwi. Kids love the taste.
Hope that helps.

Hmmm... Not sure how big your baby is, but my 8 month old twin boys eat solids three times a day as well as drinking about 24 ounces of formula. You can try feeding him pears or better yet, give him some diluted pear or apple juice during or after his meals. Try prunes as well. I've never heard that oatmeal is constipating - I know rice cereal definitely is, so stay away from that. Also, soy is very constipating as is cheese. I would say try the juice first as that should get things going. Mixing foods should not be a problem.

Hi W.,
My son is 1, and has had constipation problems since he started on solids. Changes to his diet didn't help. The only thing that did help is Mirilax - an over the counter laxative. We do 1/2 dose once a day and it has worked wonders. You might check with your doctor for a dose recommendation.
