:-) You don't "get" asthma... You always have it... But it can be a nonissue for some until the right situation irritates it. Not every one who has asthma has the full blown attacks that others have... I have an inhaler to be used as needed... I only need it when I get a cold... Other wise the coughing lingers for months. But the inhaler helps settle the irritated lungs and I can sleep and breathe better...

From your description it sounds more like he's just clearing his lungs out and then inhaling to refill them fully...

If it keeps up then mention it to the dr at your next appt. Could be that he just got a bit of a cough and phlem build up that he notices when he's moving around but once he clears it out doesn't bother him till he's inactive again for a bit... Do you notice it more right after or during really active play... Or is it more of him playing on a carpet (stiring up dust) or petting the dog?...

sounds like allergy induced asthma. but if he is only doing a couple of times pay attention to what is in the area at the time. is it a fragrance plant, something in that area sets him off find it and get rid of it.

If he's been doing it for more than a couple of days, I would probably get him checked by your dr. There is a breathing test that you can do to check for asthma.

My son has asthma and his attacks aren't the typical. He coughs a hacking cough. Is good for a few hours, coughs again. We thought it was a cold, were treating it with cold medicine. Took him in to the allergist for a scheduled appt. and it turned out he was having asthma flare-ups. Now we know. Whenever he starts up, we give him the inhaler.

Your son is too young to technically be diagnosed with asthma, which usually doesn't happen until age 4 or 5. However, they can definitely still test his breathing and may diagnose with him with some form of pre-asthma. They can definitely help you treat it.

If it's a recent thing and the conditions in your home haven't changed, consider pollen as a possible cause also.

Get it checked out but consider food sensitivies. Milk is the most common allergen, soy and wheat too.

I have asthma. That is a que from my body. telling me to watch out, an attack is on the way. I would talk to his pediatrition. You may need an emergency nebulizer to keep at your house. They only cost about $50. It's an awfully cheap insurance policy to avoid an emergency room visit! My major attacks are caused by my outdoor allergies. Especially when exposed to new things and places.

does his coughing worsen at night? i think what your son is doing is a sign.
when my daughter was 8 months she got a cold that didnt go away for 2 months until her dr diagnosed her with asthma at 10 months. she got a nebulizer and medication and shes now doing fantastic. i would take him to his dr. also a big fyi is that my daughter is asthmatic and has never wheezed!!! not all asthma sufferers wheeze. good luck!
