So What Happened?

Thank you all for the suggestions! Just to clarify this we live about 8 to 10 blocks away. My son was walking or riding his bike to school. Over half way of the school year she had seen him and from there on started giving him rides. Then his other friend mom would take him if the other didn't go to school or what not. She didn't drink coffee so we went ahead and got her a prepaid Visa card and he hand written a thank you note. They were BOTH very pleased.

Gas card or coffee card...both or either would be very fitting...although a bouquet of flowers would put a smile on my face!

Your son is being a very nice young man here. Good for him!

It is perfectly fine for your SON to give the gift. In fact, it's totally appropriate. A grocery gift card might be a nice idea or if you know that the family drinks coffee, a nice pound of coffee plus the card would be nice.

I'm sure that you have done some nice things down the line for your friend(s). This gesture is from your son and you should let HIM own the gesture. This summer, if your friend(s) need help with something, continue to lend a hand so that there continues to be reciprocity in the relationship. You're a good friend, too.

I would ask him... he's 14 and it's his idea!

When we asked my 5 year old what he wanted to give his teacher as an end-of-year "thank you" he told us that she needed some new work clothes (true), so we did a gift certificate to JC Penney.

Whatever he comes up with, go with it! Some things you may want to steer him towards...
- Gift certificate for a manicure ($15 at most)
- Baked goods
- Gas card
- Gift certificate to the local pizza place

Make sure that HE writes a nice thank you note and that he gets the chance to deliver his "thank you". Good job mom, you've definitely done something right with your boy!

A flowering plant for outside, either in the garden or in a patio pot?

Something baked is nice - it shows he made the effort himself instead of just hitting you up to pay for something.

But these moms are helping YOU out so I think it's okay if you pony up some money. It should be either RELEVANT (e.g. a gas card) or a TREAT (coffee place, whatever they enjoy). Even a nice coffee mug and a pound of GOOD coffee (if they like that) with a nice note about how this will keep her awake on the road even if they aren't driving him to school. He could wrap it himself (even if it doesn't look so nice, it's clear that it's from HIM), attach his note, and say something when he presents it about how much he appreciates what they do.

I think it's awesome that he came up with the idea himself. A lot of kids show no gratitude for anything and act so entitled. So good job on that front!

Good job Mom that it was his idea. Perhaps since it is HIS gift he can wash her car? Otherwise something he can do - mow her lawn, something would be nice. Something easier that you provide would be a gas card, car wash/detail or a coffee card.

I love Micky's suggestion of cards and flowers, maybe adding her favorite treat as well. Doing something at home may not actually do anything for her since if this is your son's friend's mom, the friend probably has these items as chores. His friend would be the receiver not the mom.

What about gas gift cards? Or a certificate for the movies? Maybe even a dvd with snacks/popcorn and such.
A beach towel and sunscreen with some cute saying. Are you on pinterest? Lots of good gift ideas on there.

He wants to give them a gift? He has the good sense to do this? Why not WE want to give them a gift?

A gas card should have already been given at Christmas and again at the end of the school year. You are late on the first one so make it $50 each.

Money for gas. What happened to school buses? Have you been giving her gas money all along? If yes, then a very nice gift card to her favorite store. If you have not been reimbursing her a check and maybe a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts card.
