my name is K. and I have two yr old daughter who has a terrible gag reflex. I am not sure what to do. Since she has been eating solid food she has had a problem. I am not so worried about her refelx as much as I am that she has to continue throwning up untill her stomach is empty. Anything can trigger her gaging, it is not just one food or not eating it right, she could just be done with eating whatever she is eating and she has to get it out of her mouth and all she has to do is open her mouth wide and she is puking. and like i said I don't worry about he throwing up as I do that she needs to empy her stomach completely. I am worried about her and what this is doing to her insides. Does anyone has any ideas?

What can I do next?

When my daughter was younger (she's 12 now) she use to throw up
everytime she hiccuped, which was pretty much after every meal. I fed her smaller meals which seemed to help but Dr told me she'd out grow it which she has but even now when she hiccups she gets the feeling that she's going to be sick.

I hope that helps.

Hi K. my name is A. and my four year old son has the same problem. His started shortly after his birth and the doctors really just ignored me. So first off please insist on them testing her for reflux because left untreated it will mess up her insides like my sons. He was eventually diagnosied with several food allegies like milk, wheat, oat, peanuts, etc. and you may be surprise to know that milk and wheat are in just about everything that we eat so even when I wasn't giving him those two things directly he was still getting it and it was making him sick. He has been on prevacid and it helps his reflux and he has not vomited in about a year. Good luck.

K.,

You should be worried about the throwing up as this means that she is not getting her proper nutrition. I am a midwife, and a Physician Assistant in the state of PA. The continual vomiting can cause the enamel on her teeth to go bad, albiet these are her baby teeth and she will get her adult teeth after awhile, but in the meantime, she is damaging her teeth and probably her esophagus as well. You need to take her to her pediatrician. There is no advice from any mother that can replace the advice of a professional.
Let me know how you get on with the situation, I will pray for her recovery from whatever is causing this.
I hope I have been of some help.
Sincerely,

J. T

I agree with Lori. I would take her to an ENT. They will be able to tell you what is wrong. I would definately do that as soon as possible. You can ask your pediatrican for a referral as most insurance companies need that before your appointment or else they wont pay for the visit.

I would highly recommend that you take her to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist to make sure all of the mechanics of the anatomy of her throat are the normal size, allowing proper flow, etc. I would guess that a good pediatrician wouldn't have a problem referring you to someone local.

I'd hate to have to watch my little one go through that.

I have never experienced this but I have talked to someone who has and this is the information she gave me. He daughter has it too and she sees a Gastroenterologist. His name is Chris Liacouras and he is a Pediatric Specialist. If you go to Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia's website you may find an office close to you. His phone number is ###-###-####. I am not sure where you are located, so if you check the website you may find something close to you. His office is in Exton, PA. I hope this helps.

i have a 4 year old that does the same thing and has done since he was really little. i can't complain either, i have been the same way since i was little (it's awful). when my son starts to gag, we found that startling him with a clap or something stopped him from gagging and allowed him to take a breath and re-coup. taking whatever it is out of his mouth startling him or diverting him and getting him to breath works best. I believe that all kids go through this at some point, hopefully your little one will grow out of it soon!

Like others have said, you definitely need to get this evaluated. If you aren't getting good help from your pediatrician or ENT like others suggested, The Children's Institute in Pittsburgh has a great program for kids with feeding problems. Check them out at www.amazingkids.org. Good luck.

I have a 3 year old daughter with reflux. She is also one that just has to empty her stomach. My suggetion to you is to take her to her ped doctor and have her seen by the specialist and they will give her meds to help with the reflux. As my daughter has gotten older she has grown out of it some. She is now able to eat anything she wants but I still watch everything that goes in her stomach. Try to watch the fried foods I have notice that they upset my daughters reflux. I also have reflux and get really bad hapburn and my is manged by meds.

You need to have this evaluated right away. A speech therapist could look and they may do a video swallow. Another rare condition called eosinic esophagitis exists and is often overlooked. Its kind of like an allergic reaction to foods in the throat. I wouldn't say this sounds like a classic case, but I did have a patient once that was vomiting frequently and that's what it turned out to be. Don't wait!

It sounds like your little girl may have reflux. That is reflux, especially if she has always had the problem. There are medicines that can help with this problem, like Reglin (I think that is how it is spelled...it has been a long time since my little girl was on it but it helped very much). You might want to see a specialist about it. There is a really good one in the Northern VA area named Dr. Scott Sirlin. He has a wonderful RN named Kathy who helps people too. There are also many support groups that you can join if you need support from other woman dealing with the same problems. The thing is that you really want to try to nip this in the bud right now b/c the constant throwing up not only causes weight issues, but can also lead to asthma and other serious issues like immune system disorders as she gets older. Dr. Sirlin is located in Ashburn, VA.
