I am looking for recommended online preschool games for my 2.5 year old little one to learn shapes, colors, numbers, alphabet. There seems to be so many out there, some free and other not and I don't know which are the best and 'safe'. Thanks in advance!
I can say for certain that my son learned a lot from the free Starfall website (starfall.com). He learned his alphabet and reading in a fun way. I sat down with him and we went through the website together until he told me wanted to do it on his own.
Once your little one becomes preschool age, there is a terrific website for math. It's www.ixl.com. My daughter's school uses it and it is fabulous! =0)

I saw something about a learning site on one of the cartoon channels about
Dora's Backpack .com - this is not the whole name of the site but maybe you have heard of it before or can find it online or maybe some other mama might have the correct site name. It is a new site to help little ones with preschool learning.

this is part of pbs ready to learn initiative. the pbs kids island is very educational and is geared toward preparing kids to read. My 2.5 year old boys love it.

this is their "play" program. you can buy the software at best buy and target i know for sure. it is 20 bucks. i'm not sure how much it is to purchase straight from the site. they offer a 15 day trial which we did and they loved it. i plan on purchasing in the future.
I do like Sesame Street, although my son knows we cannot stand to hear Elmo or Zoe. :) I like the fact that you can download something (I believe it is free) that "locks" your child in so he or she cannot navigate out of their site. That is the only one we let him use online. He is almost 4 and we started letting him on the computer sometime after he was 3. I agree, though, that at this point books would probably be better. You can also use index cards and make a craft out of making alphabet, shape, color, and number cards with her by cutting and glueing pictures or counting out sticker dots or something. We always count with our snacks and my boys like to identify the shapes in their food as they take bites out of it. :)
This site has many helpful, educational, and non-violent games. My son is almost 8 and he still plays on it. He loves Sid the Science Kid.

But you don't need online things... to teach your child.
You can just do it at home with puzzles, games, objects in the home etc. ANYTHING can teach a child these things.

I'm sure that the PBS website has some good resources, however I also suggest that you think very hard about how much time a toddler should spend looking at a screen. Two-year olds probably should be learning more from holding objects in their hands and moving them around, and some research says that too much screen time can cause eye problems. There are so many toys which will teach those basics without having the side effects, so why not go with those things? Your question also makes me wonder whether you're feeling a bit too concerned about having your child learn lots of school-type things. He or she will learn numbers and letters soon enough at his/her own pace, and certainly doesn't need to know them for the next couple years. Enjoy playing!
