So What Happened?

I did check with the home owners insurance and they will cover the dog but that dog was not for us. I know nothing about dogs but I was looking for a small family dog and after doing more research and meeting the dog, it is not a dog that I would ever get with little ones around. We did rescue a beagle (also not the dog I wanted) that was neglected severely and he is turning out to be the best dog ever!

No, but we are planning on getting one! We had a dog (Shiba Inu) that went a bit crazy after my daughter was born. We have researched dog breeds like crazy and this breed is known for being exceptional with kids. There will always be one or two that aren't, but in general, they are better than most breeds and are considered a "nanny" dog, at least if it's a real Staffy.

Check with your insurance company first and see if they are on the "no no" dog list. If so, your homeowners/renters policy could be cancelled and non-renewed. Good luck.

I don't have one but my SIL and MIL does and they are both very good with kids. My SIL has a 3 1/2 yr old son and she had the dog before she had her son (she had the dog 4 yrs before her son came along) and my MIL has had her's for around 8 yrs now and she is also very good with kids , both very soppy dogs and love to run around and play with the kids , and will also lay around and let the kids lay with them , the only thing not so good (and this is not a bad thing) is when they are young and still playful they are very strong and can knock a little kid over easily , if your kids are older then not so bad but if you have a toddler then you would need to watch that.

My cousin has one, and she's good with everybody: babies, kids, other dogs, people (not so much cats) but she isn't always aware of her size and is a bit of a spaz, read HYPER. They've had her since she was a puppy and have been through obedience classes with her, highly recommended because they are very strong dogs. She doesn't bark too much and she thinks everyone is her friend.
You need to check your city ordinances too since there are cities that have banned them and/or have extra fees and specific leash laws (like a muzzle) or specific fencing rules for being an owner of one, no thanks to their bad reputation. My cousin & his wife just went through fighting new ordinances over the summer with other owners in their city and won.

We had one before we had our kids, and she was great until my baby started crawling, than she got very territorial, and she was re-homed when she nipped at his face.

Home owners insurance won't cover that dog in Ohio.

I haven't owned one, but I have worked with several though a vet's office and knowing several people that own one or two. 99.9%, just like most other breeds, are wonderful family dogs. The ones I have know have been great with kids and other animals. The ones I have know have not been big barkers. We had one client that did rescue for the breed and she only had problems with one, but that one was deaf and blind and had a hard time getting along with the cats because she liked to follow them around and they did not like that and would turn around and swat her. She ended up getting adopted by one of our staff and is one of the sweetest dogs. They really are a great breed that gets a bad rap a lot of the time. Just make sure to talk to the rescue group, they usually know which ones within their group are suitable for families and other pets. Also make sure you meet any you are thinking about adopting and if you have another dog have them meet and greet on neutral territory if possible. Good luck and hope you find your perfect family member!
