Any Moms Own a VW Bug?

My husband wrecked his car today, he is not hurt but the car is totalled. He was looking at getting another car and saw a very cute, very nice condition, low mileage, good price VW bug. But it is a girl car so if he decided to get it basically it would be my car and he would take my truck which is extended cab and fits 6. Plenty of room for 3 kids in back.
Anyway that is my question... how much room is in the backseat? Pros/Cons, etc. I have 2 kids in booster seats still so they take a bit more room then just 3 kids sitting back there. Any good or bad things about it from a moms view? Cup holders, hard or easy to get in and out of, etc.
Thanks moms

Why is a VW bug a girl car? I think he should find something that will suit his own needs so you can keep the truck with more room but that is just my opinion. I think the kids will be pretty cramped in the back of a VW. Good luck!

I remember trying to get my one child at the time in and out of my mothers bug and it sucked. No 2 door is a good choice for kids.

With two kids I am looking for a car with a third row. So many time you need to fit one more in for a carpool or playdate. My Saab station wagon barely fits 3. I have to take the oldest and put him in the middle with no booster and even then it is hard as heck to buckle. NO WAY would I take a bug. Love them, but no way.

The bug is a great car, however you will NOT be happy with it for a family. The bugs are only 2 door which is a pain in the neck in itself. The car is not very big and with children, I personally would want a car that would be more reliable in a crash. If your truck were to hit your bug, the bug would lose in a big way. There is no price you can put on the safety of your children, but putting them in a 2 door compact car is not a good idea. You should be looking into buying a 4 door midsized car or a used minivan.
Good luck
L. - 33 year old that drove a bug when I lived in Chicago 5 years ago...those cars are GREAT city cars, not good family cars.

I used to own one for a few years and I loved it! However, there is almost no leg room in the backseat and I'm assuming all 3 of your kids have legs that move constantly. It's a great 2nd family car to have (very safe despite what others are saying) but it would not be a good thing as the main car for 3 kids.

If your husband wrecked his and it was totaled out, what do you think would happen to your two kids in the back if you were in a wreck?

Unless your third child is old/big enough to ride up front there is not enough room for three kids in the bug. We had one, it was a great car, we loved it but we only have two kids. There is only two seats in the back so even without the booster seats it wouldn't work. Also with the two boosters in the back depending on the style the seat belts can be hard for kids to operatet on there own. As for the car being a girly car our bug was my husbands car. We had a diesel because of the amount of mileage he drove. It had well over 200,000 miles in it when we sold it. It also handled 3 different accidents.

Dear J.,
I had an old bug when I was single (2 door). I don't think of it as a family car even if it has 4 doors. If he is serious about it, go to the car dealer and take the booster seat etc.. and try it out yourself. You are going to be driving it so you need to make sure it is right for YOU.

I'm not sure what Diana B is talking about. Her response doesn't seem to have anything to do with your question.

My cousin had a Bug when they first came out (turns out you really CAN win a car when you drop a slip of paper in the box at Home Depot!). There is no way 2 boosters and a 3rd child would fit in the back of those. Tell your husband to find a car he wants to drive and let you keep the truck. Unless you are wanting to give up the truck, then find a mid-sized car, not a sub-compact. A Fusion/Milan, or an Impala, or a Charger...something bigger. Take your car seats and put them in the when you go to test drive. Also remember that your children are growing. So if it's tight now, unless you're going to get another car in 2 years, they may not fit by that time.

I LOVED my VW bug, but we traded it in when I got pregnant!

I'm not even sure two booster seats would fit in the back (the third child would most likely have to sit up front), and it's only a two-door, so that means lifting the seats up for every excursion. There's not a ton of trunk space, no cup holders, etc.

However, I found an awesome deal on a VW Passat, and that is a GREAT family car. Lots of trunk space, plenty of room for my two baby seats, room for both seats and an adult to fit comfortably in the back seat, etc.

Good luck!
