My 2 year old who is starting potty training had an accident on the couch. I am unable to remove my cushions so I was wondering how to get the urine and smell from the cushion. Any suggestions would be helpful. I tried to soak up as much as I could with towels, but the smell is still there. Thanks.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your helpful advice. I used a little of a lot of things. The main one being Equal parts water and white vinegar. I also used a pet spray that my neighbor suggested and spot shot. I soaked up as much as I could using towels and standing on the cushion then sprayed the water/vinegar solution and let it dry. No stain or smell. The Pet spray had a pleasant smell that even covered the vinegar smell. Thanks again!

Hi H.,
The best thing I have found is a pet cleaner. You can buy it at the local grocery and it is called Pet Stain Remover/Oxy Clean. It has taken up everything, pet and human...lol
Good Luck!

This might be for next time, but one potty training book suggested corn starch, but it seems to only work if the area is still wet, so if it's already dry this is not your answer. Soak up most of the accident with a towel and put a layer of corn starch on the "stain." The corn starch seems to soak up the liquid and draw it out from within the cushion. When the corn starch is dry, you vacuum it up. We did this on our couch, mattress and carpet (numerous times!)

The Nature's Miracle works for me, too. It's gotten us through 1 dog, 2 cats and potty training. You can get it at Pet Smart. You soak the spot and then let it stay wet for awhile -- someone even recommended putting plastic wrap over the wet spot so it dries slowly and works better. I think it almost smells worse before it dries, but when it dries, the smell is gone. So, be patient, but it works!

When my son did this I took the covers off the cushions and washed them in the tub, first applying a peroxide/baking soda mix and scrubbing them with a brush. If you do this though test a small area first cause that can take the color out of some things. After scubbing with that solution I rinsed them out thoroughly and hung them to dry and the urine smell is gone.

I had this same thing when my kids were little. I just put baking soda on the area. I made a stiff paste with water and rubbed it in. I then waited for it to dry and used the vacuum cleaner on it. No smell was left. It's cheap easy to try!! I'd test an area on the back of the couch or somewhere that you won't see to make sure it comes off easy. Good luck!!! I know it's frustrating!!!

Try Nature's Miracle. It works wonders for getting the stain AND the smell out. I have two older dogs and a baby, and I don't know what I'd do without it.

I had one of our friends kids pee on my coach one night when he feel asleep. Best thing that worked for me to get it out and the smell was vinager. Put a little on and tab it out. I have used it a couple of times now with my 2 year old if she leaks through her diaper. Has worked great.

Scrub with soft brush water, Dawn, & baking soda mixture. You want this to soak in so I would do this outside where you could hose off abd leave outdoors to dry for a day or two. Get baby his own poly type chair for him to sit on and keep him off the big people furniture. Make it a special chair, even a desk/chair so that he can look at books, color, play with cars of trucks, puzzles, etc. He can watch t.v. or anything in his own personal chair. After the potty training you can do whatever but remember, little ones step in stuff that they carry onto furniture and their dirty little hands are everywhere also.

Take it from someone whose child treats her couch like the world's largest urinal cake...you need enzymes to get the job done. Go to the pet store and get Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution. I've heard BacOut works well too, but I don't have personal experience with the product. (I'm usually loathe to recommend brand names on message boards, but if you aren't a pet owner, you may not know what to look for.) Follow the instructions on the bottle and the smell should be gone within the week.

Good luck!

I've used the "resolve multi-fabric cleaner"
It works well on just about any household fabric.Just test a little in a spot on the back of the couch before using it in a large place to make sure it does not take away color. I've used it on my sofa plenty of times and it has worked well. I think I bought it at target or maybe jewel(try target because it'll be cheaper).

The small nozzle helps steam to gets in and deep clean. It really helped. We have no stain or smell.
