So I called the nurse and am waiting to hear back but wanted to knwo if aanyone else had this issue. I am almost 36 weeks, so a month left to go. I have been doing great w/ my blood sugar numbers and was able to go down to testing twice a day (fasting test and then once more when I choose, usually i hr after breakfast). I have been waking up hungry around midnight-2am and have a snack, so my fasting blood level isnt really fasting I guess and is a little high. Nor,ally I wake up and it is arounf 85 (range is suppose to be 79-94 for fasting). When I have a snack has been 95, 98, 97, but after breakfast I test again and well with in limit (range 70-129) I come in around 101. i dont have a large baby and am still eating well, so I am just attributing the high number in the morning due to the fact that I am not fasting for 10+ hrs. I dont think its an issue, but didnt know if I was down playing it ir not. I left a message for nurse ( I would hate to not care and have it be a big deal or something ya know). So what do you think or have you experienced this as well and what did your Dr say?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies, I appriciate it :) I talked to the nurse and she said as long as I was eating healthy and my sugars were not in the 100's it was nothing to worry about. And S.K. I agree with you. I am 5'11'' and weight 167lbs at 9 mo preggo, so I dont think I am overwieght by anymeans ( I weighted 165 before getting preggo so needless to say my belly is very small). You guys are all awesome, love this site :) ((HUGS))

Follow what your body is telling you and don't stress about it. I had GD with 4 of my pregnancies, and had numbers all over the place with some of them, great numbers for others, and they were all fine. I also agree with the other posters who point out that GD is not really studied very well and the numbers are in a way very arbitrary. You are doing fine!

Did you know that there is NO SCIENCE behind the numbers they have picked for pregnant women? In fact, there is a growing movement that GD is a diagnosis looking for a disease that doesn't in fact exist!

I am sure you are fine. Don't let the worry create a problem where there isn't one.

COngrats and hang tight. the end is terrible, but you are so close to holding your LO!

btw, the numbers American Dr use are lower than the numbers WHO recommends. This is seriously a controversial area.

I agree with Ally J - I don't think you have anything to worry about. I've done quite a bit of reading about gestational diabetes since I was borderline with my 1st pregnancy and there's quite a bit of debate in the literature about what numbers actually constitute a problem. It's natural for your blood sugars to be a little higher than normal because you're pregnant and that baby needs access to the sugar in your bloodstream. You're doing great - and congrats!

I went thru thru GD with both pregnancies. The first one, I followed the GD diet and guideline to the letter. Maintained my blood sugar in the 'good range' throughout by dieting and exercise. My baby was born a little under 6 lbs. She was long and skinny! I'm talking bony with wrinkled, sagging skin! I was determined I would not do that to my 2nd baby. Like you, I woke up hungry in the middle of the night. The first time around, I starve myself. The second time, I refused to starve myself or my baby. IMO, you're fine. As long as you eat healthy when you snack. I had steak sandwiches, or grilled chicken with a side of vegetables and toast, etc. My second daughter was born at 6 lbs, 1 oz.
I would even go so far as to say doctors don't really know what causes GD or what the right way to treat it is. I was told by doctors and dieticians that obesity causes GD. I'm 5 ft tall and weigh 85 lbs before I was pregnant. It's amazing they could actually say that to my face.
Hang in there, you've got another month to go. And congratulations!

I also had gestational diabetes and I must say, your numbers are excellent! I was on insulin 3 times per day and no matter how perfect I was my numbers were rarely good. My son, now 9 months old, was born without any problems and my diabetes went away almost immediately!

As far as waking up hungry and snacking, I didn't experience that but remember learning that insulin levels drop during the early morning hours and snacking is good so you don't crash while you sleep. High blood sugar levels are bad, but too low is flat out dangerous! So your body seems to know this and wakes you up to eat.

I don't think you have anything to worry about at all! Just make sure when you go into labor they monitor you for too low numbers. When I was in labor, of course unexpected, my endocrinologist was not notified and the insulin I was supposed to be on was never administered. I was told not to eat anything and because I knew about the dangers of low blood sugar, I monitored myself and had my partner smuggle in snacks to keep my numbers from crashing. I was shocked at how little the medical staff and even doctor knew about this. After talking with the head nurse a few days after my son was born I received a lot of validation and the hospital mandated diabetes training for all nurses on the maternity ward.

Probably too much information you didn't even ask for! But I figured it might help you or someone else reading this post:)

You sound like you are doing great and will have a wonderful and healthy baby! Congratulations!!!
