Has anyone been allergic to their rings during one pregnancy but not during another? Wondering if this could be an indicator of childs gender. I was allergic to my white gold wedding ring when i got pregnant with my daughter and only could wear them again after almost a year after she was born. I am pregnant again but no reaction to the gold this time....maybe its a boy?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

okay we are having another little girl. so i guess i am one of those moms that supports the "each pregnancy is just different" philosophy. We are very excited. Surprised that it is not a boy but so grateful to have a healthy baby girl on the way! May i not be allergic to my rings for any future pregnancies! Its nice when someone sees your pregnant that they know you are happily married too! I know I shouldn't care but I am grateful to not be going through raising kids alone.

It sounds like you have an allergy to nickel. White gold and 9% gold contain nickel; solid gold (and silver) do not.

I found the following explanation:

"10 to 12% of the female population and 6% of the male population are estimated to be allergic to nickel. In fact the allergy is not caused by nickel itself but by the nickel salts which are formed from perspiration in contact with the piece of jewellery piece or watch. This phenomenon is always accompanied by corrosion of the object."

I suppose it's possible that being pregnant with a particular sex could change the chemicals/hormones in your sweat... which could then increase the nickel salts created when wearing your ring. Or, you might have been previously pregnant at a time of year when you sweat more than now-?

However, if you have developed a dermatits previously, you should consider avoiding all nickel containing metals/objects... Which means you may need to replace your wedding band with a pure gold (or platinum, if you don't want a gold color). Otherwise, your next reaction could be worse... Never know.

Honestly...I really don't think that has anything to do with gender. Kind of a really far stretch.

I don't think this is about the child's gender
but about your chemical processes.
You might have less of something than you had last time,
or more of something.

I had an odd "allergy" to my rings. I would get blisters that would have a hard time healing unless I took them off for a while. It was very random and I had a hard time figuring out what was causing it. I am allergic to Soft Soap. If I do have to use it I always make sure I rinse extra well then move my rings around while drying my hands to get every bit of moisture gone.

Interesting .... I guess you'll have to tell us if it is or isn't a boy. Wouldn't that be a great story?

If it turns out to be that simple to know the gender you could put ultrasounds out of business ;)
Let us know... that is very interesting indeed.
