my son and daughter are sharing a room with a bunk bed in it. my daughter is ready to have her own room, so there will be only one kid in the room with the bunk bed. my son says he wants to sleep on top. how old should a kid be before he 'moves up'? he is going on 4, i think hes too young, although he does sleep through the night well. what do ya think?

What can I do next?

Hello My name is M. and I have a 6 year old and a 3 1/2 year old. I know what it is like and I just want to say that I went going through the same thing. I honesty think that they should be a little older, but it all depends on if they have their own room that would be okay. I hope that it will help you...take care

My son is four and he has been sleeping on the top bunk for about a year now. I do not let him play up there, it is only for sleeping. He never had a promblem climbing up and down the ladder. I always have a night light on in his room so if he does wake up in the middle of the night he can see what he is doing.

I just now started letting my soon to be 5 Yr old sleep on the top..I guess it would depend on how well he can get up and down and if he is a roller in the bed at night!

I personally wouldnt let him as 3 almost 4 in my opinion is to young to be up there. Typical children at that age still like to jump on beds and off of the...if he were to jump from up there he could be seriously hurt or if he were to be jumping on the bed and fall he could definatley be hurt. I would say if you have the room to seperate the bunk beds for a while, I would do that so you dont lose the extra bed and you dont have to worry about him getting hurt from jumping or attempting to fly like superman.

You know I need bunk beds for my two children as well and I have a 4 year old getting close to 5. I am gonna get um for him as soon as we get our tax return. His sister who is almost 3 will get the bottom and him the top. I know they say they should be like 8 but I feel he will do fine. My niece's had them when They were fairly young. I think she might have been four when she had the top bunk. So I'd say that if he is fairly responsible go for it.

I recently bought a bunk bed/desk for my 5 yrs old to free up extra space in his room!! And I thought he'd love it as well. Needless to say he has done very well except for about a month or two after he got it he was coming down the ladder and half way down jumped and landed fine on his feet and hands. But when he landed it was to much pressure on his hand and he broke it!!! It turned out to be a hair line fracture But I started to second guess the whole bunk bed thing!!! But after a month in a cast and a lesson learned the hard way!! The Bunk bed has really worked well for us! But we have ground Rules that have to be followed! I hope this helps a little !

My son is not quite 4 and he's been sleeping in the top for about 6 mos. We had a rail along the outside edge and since we only let him get up there at bedtime, it wasn't a play place option. He's never fallen out. Our set of beds is higher than some of the newer versions.

We did just lay the ladder on top for a while so he couldn't climb up it. We also hung a blanket from the top down for when he was starting sleeping in the bottom to make a kind of tent. The whole camping idea kept him down there for a while.

If he's a good sleeper then he'd probably be okay. Most falling off happens during horseplay.

Hi K.,

My two boys shared a bunk bed starting at ages two and four. My four year old did fine on the top. As long as you have a safety side rail to where he can't accidentaly roll off, he should be fine sleeping on the top bunk. I hope this helps some.

My youngest son was sleeping on the top bunk by the time he was three. One thing you can do it buy a railing that you can put up by his head. Then, the risk of falling out is less. If he sleeps all night, without waking to go to the bathroom or bad dreams, he should be safe. Good luck.

Hi...as a mother to 2 girls who once upon a time had a bunk bed set, I feel that 3 going on 4 is a bit too young to be on the top bunk, unless of course, your set has the safety guard rail. Even a fall from that distance can cause some serious injury to a young person. I would wait another year or so until putting the child on the top bunk.
