My daughter and I were diagnosed with thrush last Tuesday (10days ago) and we still have it after being on medication the entire time. She is on Nystatin liquid and I am on the cream. She continues to have white patches inside her mouth and i have small traces of it still too.I have sanitized every paci and toy that she puts in her mouth. This is my first time with this and am not to sure if I should continue the meds (this tuesday was our last day although i have continues to use it). Should I call her doctor and ask for something else? What has your doctor given u and your baby?

What can I do next?

I cant remember the name of it but there is this really messy stuff call violet something. Everyone that I know who has used it loves how fast it works, they just dont like the stains and mess it makes.

There is also a tea called Pau d Arco. You can drink it but she is still too little I think.

Hi J., after a round of treatment from the pediatrician and no success (no cure or relief) my babies doctor suggested a product that I could buy for less than $2.00 at Walmart! I was annoyed that we spent the money, time and exposing the baby to antibiotics that didn't work! Here's a link to the gentian violet we used. Check with your doctor before you do it, I am not a medical professional. http://breast-health.suite101.com/article.cfm/gentian_vio...
Take care
S.
P.S. by the way, within three days the trush was all cleared up. Just beware that the baby will have a purple tongue and if she spits, it could stain clothes.

That happened with my son when he was 2 weeks old. I was given the oral med for him that you swab around his mouth and a cream for me. It cleared it up for about a day and a half then it came back. I called my GYN and got a prescription for Diflucan (the oral yeast infection pill) for myself and had his ped refill his medication. This time it worked. And fast. When I called my to make sure it was safe to nurse after taking this med I was told by my ped that it was, but she wasn't able to give ME a script so she didn't think to give me the information. Same thing happened to my Sister-In-Law a year later. I warned her to call her doctor first thing, but the ped didn't say anything about her treatment and it followed the same course. The second go-round she called her Dr and got the Diflucan.
That's what worked for me. Good luck.
PS. I'm assuming your nursing. If not, then what I said may not pertain to you. Still, good luck

My son had thrush a couple times and the Nystatin didn't work for us. An older woman recommended gentian violet so I discussed it with the pharmacist at Walgreens and decided to try it. It worked great! My son had a VERY purple mouth for a day or so, but it cleared it right up with only one or two uses. Here is an article I found if you want to check it out: http://pediatrics.about.com/cs/breastfeeding/a/gentian_vi...
You can google it and find more info. I didn't mix it with water, just dipped a Q tip in the purple stuff and went around the inside of his mouth/lips and tongue.

If you find thrush/yeast a recurring issue, look into a lifestyle of probiotic foods. You can learn more at
http://www.bodyecology.com
A traditional diet is also great for eliminating systemic yeast:
http://www.westonaprice.org

Again, this is for folks ready to make a lifestyle change and rethink what they understand about food and diet!

Also, coconut oil has antimicrobial properties, topically and internally. Gentian Violet is popular and lots of garlic. And real fermented foods! Treat from the inside!

I haven't dealt with thrush in this exact way, BUT I have dealt with candida. Some things to include in your efforts would be to try and cut out all sugar for awhile for you and your baby and also decrease the amount of carbs in your diet (esp. simple carbs). Simple carbs turn to sugar in the body fast and sugar feeds yeast (candida, thrush).

MotherLove is a company that makes a product called Diaper rash/Thrush cream. It comes in a small jar and it is sold at Whole Foods. It helps with the itch immensely. Yes, you can put it on your nipples. It's organic, too.

Also, give yourself and your baby a good probiotic. The yeast doesn't like it. Baby probiotics come in a powder that you can add to food very easily or a small spoonful in the mouth might be better anyway. Look for probiotics in the refrigerated section and also ones with multiple strains (at least 5 kinds listed in the ingredients including the infanitis kind...possibly spelled wrong).

Yeast takes awhile to go away. Sometimes the medication is still working several days after you are finished taking it. There are also several homeopathic remedies for thrush, but you need either a classical homeopath or a book to read to figure out which one would work for your situation. One good book is Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines by Cummings and Ullman. You can take homeopathics side by side with allopathic medications (prescribed by your doctor). They won't interfere (but I doubt your doctor knows anything about homeopathics because it's natural and alternative medicine).

Good luck, contact me if you have any other questions.

My little one had thrush and had to stay on Nystatin for 3 rounds (30 days). It was not a happy time as every time I gave him the Nystatin he would double up. The doctor told me that if the 3rd round wasn't successful we would go to Gentian Violet. Well, the third round worked and he had no further problems. That was about 18 years ago. If I only knew then what I knew now. Probiotics are amazing. I might even agree to using the Gentian Violet initially but then get your little one, and the whole family, on probiotics daily. It's one of the best things you can do for everyone.

If I remember correctly, Nystatin has about a 49% cure rate, which means it takes care of thrush less than half the time. Most of my kids have had thrush at one time or another. The thing that has worked miracles has been to get a carton of plain organic yogurt (has to be organic because it typically has _many_ more strains of probiotics that national brands) and dip my finger in the liquid that rises to the top and smear that all over the inside of the baby's mouth. Then with a clean finger, get some out to put on the nipples, too. Leave the bra flaps down long enough to let that dry on. Most of the time, by the next feed, the baby's mouth is markedly improved. I continue on with this treatment after every feed for three days after the symptoms are cleared up.

Definitely go with gentian violet. You get it OTC at any drugstore...just ask the pharmacist for it. It really does stain EVERYTHING, so take off all of baby's clothes. I used an old bib or rag to clean up. You use a q-tip to swab it in baby's mouth and on your nipples as well. I remember that it made my baby's mouth so purple that we stayed home until we were done with the treatment! Although it's messy and a pain to deal with, this got rid of it every time for me. Ask your ped. about it.
