A Good Place for a Day Trip to the Ocean?

Hi - My DH actually has a day off on Friday and we were considering taking a day trip to the coast to escape the 110 degree heat and poor air quality in Sacramento. Do any of you have a good spot on the coast that you like to go to with your family. We would like a place where DS can maybe get his feet wet in the ocean; a good clam chowder bowl might be nice too.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great responses. Most of you mentioned Stinson Beach. We chose this location for a couple of reasons, one, we had never been there, and two it was the closest - the least amount of drive time. It was wonderful! Very popular place apparently - lots of people there. I love the quaint little town. We had dinner at "the Sand Dollar" - very good clam chowder. The beach was nice - clean with a snack bar and restrooms w/ showers! A perfect place for a toddler. So thanks again.
I got a lot of responses for Bodega Bay/Fort Bragg areas too. We've been to both of those places and do love them, but felt it was a bit too far for just a day trip.

I personally like Half Moon Bay for a nice relaxing beach day. We used to live down there. Pacifica is right around the corner which is nice too. Santa Cruz is nice and there is a lot more activites there, if that's what you are looking for. If you are just going to play and relax, I like Half Moon Bay the best.

Too funny! That's exactly what I was looking online for tonight. We are planning to go this weekend as well with our 6 month old son. We are trying out Stinson Beach. A friend of mine goes there with her 2 year old son, and it's about an hour and a half away. Here's a link to the site:

Muir beach is a good place for families. It is in Marin county south of Muir Woods. The water is still cold, but the beach is great for exploring and there isn't usually a lot of wind. I would still wear water shoes, but it was pretty sandy last year when we went. They also allowed fires on the beach in pits.

i also agree with the others..bodega bay is really nice! we go there all the time for camping because they have some spots right there on the ocean at wright's beach! there is also an awesome restaurant called the inn at the tides, really good seafood! and next to that is a small snack bar where you can get the good old fashioned chowder in a bowl(or without the bowl!) either way its sooooo good!! have fun if you go!!!!

Stinson Beach is the best place to go, it is in Marin County north of San Francisco. The town is darling with a couple good restaurants, and even a good "snack shack" on the beach where you can get a great bowl of clam chowder. If you have a dog, the north end of the beach is dog friendly! It is about 2 hours from Sac. Have fun!!!

Hi T.,
I L. Fort Bragg but it is a little too far for a day trip. Another favorite place is Bodega Bay. It has great clam chowder and some good tide pools.
Sincerely,
L.

Hi T.,
I hope I'm not too late....Try Half Moon Bay/Santa Cruz, Monterey or the Fort Bragg-Mendicino area. Depending on how far you want to drive....all are gorgeous, any beach area will have clam chowder...Santa Cruz offers a boardwalk, games, rides etc...Monterey has the fish aquarium...Half Moon Bay if you want to just walk around a nice lil town & enjoy the weather,Fort Bragg-Mendicino area, has a train ride in to the forest and again just beautiful scenry & great resturants......Hope this helps...
Wish I could go too!!!!!
Enjoy,
L.

pacifica is a beautiful place to go to the beach. Not a far walk to the water but not much else to do there. Only about 20min or so outside the city to have lunch.
